The Heart of Havergal: Our People

Shirley Garcia, Executive Director of Human Resources

At Havergal College, people are the reason we succeed. As the Executive Director of Human Resources, my role is to support the recruitment, retention and development of the finest teachers and staff so they can create the best possible environment for our students. We believe deeply in supporting our employees, who shape the experiences our students look forward to each day.

Compassion and clear intention guide the work of our HR team every day. We use thoughtful and practical approaches, guided by data and genuine listening, to shape decisions across all HR areas — from hiring educators and staff to developing programs that help everyone feel valued and able to do their best work. We believe that creating a supportive environment means people can confidently make choices aligned with our shared mission: student success.

Our strategic plan sets clear priorities. In our school, being future-ready means investing in ongoing professional growth and creating meaningful opportunities for learning through formal training, supportive relationships, collaboration and real experiences at work. This thoughtful planning ensures our teachers and staff feel prepared and valued today and into the future.

Transforming tomorrow begins with the thoughtful actions we take today. When our employees feel supported and that their work matters, students feel it and collectively benefit from an enhanced school experience in a healthy, positive environment. Our strength lies in the sincerity of our support. When we all work together with a clear shared goal, our whole community thrives. And that’s what makes our school special and stronger and ready for the future.

Message from the Board of Governors

Rob Brown, Chair of The Havergal College Foundation Board of Directors

Established in 1966, the Havergal College Foundation is a registered charity that both receives and invests donations to support key priorities for Havergal College. The Foundation oversees an investment portfolio of mostly donor-endowed funds, valued at $36.6 million as at June 30, 2024. These endowed funds have been gifted over time by parents, Old Girls/Alums, graduating classes, faculty and staff. The Foundation disburses a certain percentage of the value of the endowed funds annually to the school.

Working with an external investment manager and in accordance with the Foundation’s Statement of Investment Policies and Objectives, the Foundation ensures that its resources are prudently invested with the aim of both growing and preserving capital while maintaining the ability to provide stable grants to the College for priorities such as student financial assistance, capital projects and enriched academic and co-curricular programming.

The Foundation is governed by a board of nine Directors, including ex-officio appointments of Havergal’s Board of Governors and a member of the Havergal Old Girls Association.

Because Havergal’s annual revenues must cover not only the present year’s expenses but also capital investment and infrastructure costs, fundraising is essential to maintaining Havergal’s ongoing financial health and strength. We are grateful to generations of donors, past, present and future, for their generous contributions and ongoing belief in Havergal’s mission.

Why Great Teachers Never Stop Learning

Seonaid Davis, Vice Principal of Teaching & Learning

When teachers embrace lifelong learning, they set an excellent example for their students. Their excitement about learning is contagious and inspires students to develop the same mindset.

In a constantly evolving world, lifelong learning has become essential for teachers. New discoveries, technologies and teaching methods are continually emerging, and staying current allows educators to bring the most relevant knowledge and tools into their classrooms. By doing so, they ensure that students receive the highest quality education possible.

Ongoing learning enables teachers to make their lessons more meaningful and relevant to real-world events. It also deepens their understanding of students’ diverse needs, helping them create inclusive and supportive classrooms where every student feels valued.

By learning more about how the brain works and how people learn, teachers can improve their teaching methods. This allows them to address not only academic needs but also the emotional and social aspects of learning, which are just as important.

In the Junior School, our curriculum coordinators in Literacy, Mathematics, STEM and Technology provide job embedded professional development (PD) to teachers on a continual basis. This PD model supports teachers by providing expert guidance as they apply their newly gained knowledge in practice.

In the Upper School, departments have joint goals and often a selection of faculty in the department attend specific PD offerings. When these teachers return to Havergal after attending PD, they share what they have learned with the rest of the department. This is an example of job-embedded PD.

For teachers, learning isn’t just about improving skills — it’s also a way to stay excited and passionate about their work. Exploring new ideas sparks creativity and keeps teaching fresh and enjoyable. Whether through attending workshops, collaborating with colleagues or reflecting on their own experiences, teachers are always finding ways to grow and improve. This constant growth helps them bring new energy and ideas to their classrooms, benefiting them and their students.

Havergal’s HCPA: Partners & Difference Makers

Maggie Houston-White, Executive Director of Strategic Enrolment Management

If you ask a new Havergal family, a current student or an Old Girl/Alum what makes Havergal special, one word inevitably comes up: community. The relationships built here, the shared experiences and the collective belief that we don’t just aspire to make a difference — which we do — are all part of the magic that defines Havergal.

The Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA) has played a vital role in shaping and strengthening this sense of community. Originally known as the Havergal Community Committee (HCC), the group was renamed in the mid-2010s to better reflect its mission: fostering a strong sense of belonging for every parent. All parents are welcome to get involved, whether by joining a special event committee like the Gator Gala or A-mazing Race, serving as a Grade Rep to keep fellow parents informed or organizing social gatherings that help families connect and build lasting friendships.

Beyond bringing parents together, HCPA members generously give their time and talent to support key events that not only strengthen our community, but also raise funds that enhance student opportunities and facilities — helping every Havergal student thrive.

Havergal’s faculty and staff are also among the many beneficiaries of the HCPA’s work. Whether through thoughtful appreciation events, co-ordinating volunteers for academic and co-curricular initiatives, or engaging in meaningful discussions about school programs, the HCPA is a valued partner in ensuring Havergal remains a leader among girls’ schools in Canada.

We are deeply grateful to all parents who contribute to Havergal, whether by volunteering through the HCPA, by attending events or supporting initiatives in countless other ways. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child; we believe it also takes a village to support a school. The HCPA is not just a key partner in our community — it is a vital part of our village.

Pre-Loved Uniforms Earth Week Sale

Support the planet and the HCPA by shopping at the Pre-Loved Uniform team’s sale on Monday, April 28 from 2:30 to 5 pm outside the Junior School Learning Hub.

Now’s a great time to get an early jump on spring cleaning and look through closets for HC uniform items that might be too small but are still in great shape. The HCPA has installed permanent collection bins across from the Learning Hub at the Junior School and in the alcove by the glass door entrance to the Upper School (across from the Green & Gold Shop).

We gratefully accept skirts, tunics, pants, polo shirts, dress shirts, sweaters, 1/4 zip sweatshirts, jogging pants and blazers. Please note that we do not accept socks, green leggings, House shirts, customized sweatshirts, spirit wear, gym uniforms or white Grad blazers.

When donating, please keep in mind that uniform items should be gently-used — no rips or stains! Note that the HCPA Pre-Loved Uniform initiative is not affiliated with the HC Green & Gold Shop.

We wanted to thank the Pre-Loved uniform team for their amazing efforts and for the support of the whole community for making the sales in February a huge success: more than $3,000 was raised, bringing the total amount raised to date to more than $9,000! Thank you to everyone who supported our last sale.

Supporting Excellence in Education

Each year, we invite our community members to make a commitment to the students of Havergal College and their education. While tuition covers general school operations, it is the generosity of our Havergal Fund donors that enables us to offer enriched academic and co-curricular programming, positioning Havergal as a leading institution for girls’ education. Every year, we identify priorities for this funding to ensure that we are maintaining and building our capacity in the areas of greatest need.

Your contribution to The Havergal Fund today will support key initiatives, including, but not limited to:

  • the development of innovative curricula
  • athletic, artistic and co-curricular enhancements
  • faculty development
  • student financial assistance
  • mental health and wellbeing programs

Become a donor today by contributing to The Havergal Fund. Your support, no matter the amount, will have a lasting impact on the lives of students, helping us create an environment that nurtures their potential and resilience. Grade 11 Students Explore the Power of Authenticity

Fiona Marshall, Director of Student Leadership

For the second year in a row, Havergal hosted a special leadership retreat for Grade 11 students, who will become stewards of the student body in the fall of 2025. Throughout the year, this class has explored their values in Advising time, recognizing that leadership is an ongoing practice rather than a destination. They brought these insights to a day of reflection and growth, themed The Power of Authenticity and Letting Go of What Gets in the Way. Because authenticity is a cornerstone of Havergal’s leadership philosophy, creating space for students to engage in this self-discovery is an essential part of our work at the school.

Students began the day with an inspiring talk from guest speaker Monika Myers, a Grade 11 Canadian student with Down Syndrome who has made waves in the fashion industry as a high-fashion model on runways around the world. Monika shared how embracing authenticity and courage has allowed her to create a more inclusive space and positively impact others. As an ambassador for Down Syndrome and advocate for diversity and inclusion — both for those with visible and invisible differences — she encouraged our students to join her in defining themselves as Brave and Beautiful.

The Grade 11 students spent the rest of the morning engaged in activities designed to help them reflect on their true selves — beyond who they feel they should be — while embracing the uniqueness of authenticity and imperfection. They then explored how authenticity shapes and strengthens communities through an impactful authenticity workshop led by Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging, Nicole Cozier.

In the afternoon, participants explored the barriers preventing them from fully embracing their authentic selves. Through both individual reflection and collective sharing, they identified what was holding them back. They then wrote these barriers down, read them aloud and cast them into a fire pit, which was a powerful symbol of their commitment to letting go and breaking them down each day.

The day concluded with a meaningful collective sharing activity, leaving our future Grad class feeling more connected, empowered and valued for who they truly are. With a renewed sense of confidence and unity, they are ready to lead the student body next year. As one student put it, “This experience brought us closer together as a class, and together we can do anything.”

Inside Havergal

Belonging Matters

Nicole Cozier, Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

Belonging may seem to some like the latest “it” concept, but research shows that belonging is essential for student wellbeing and success. When students truly belong, they engage more fully, take risks in their learning and deepen resilience. Without it, they disconnect, struggle or seek belonging elsewhere — often in harmful spaces that offer a false sense of connection. In a time when the world feels increasingly fractured, the work of belonging is more important than ever.

As educators, we have a responsibility to ensure that all students find real, healthy belonging in communities that uplift and support them.

At Havergal, that means that belonging isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s a necessity and a priority practice embedded in every part of school life so students feel valued not just for what they achieve, but for who they are.

This commitment is evident in Junior and Upper School Cultural Prayers when students share their personal histories, languages and traditions, offering their peers a window into their identities and experiences and deepening their sense of pride in who they are and how they shape our school.

Through the development of community agreements, our Middle School students co-create commitments to define how they want to learn, lead and support one another throughout the year.

In the Upper School, Affinity Groups and Alliance Spaces help students connect within and across identity groups, forming deep relationships built on shared experiences and mutual respect. Most recently, in the Grade 11 retreat on authenticity, students explored what it means to show up as their true selves and how they can create spaces where others feel safe enough to do the same.

These are just a few of the ways we centre belonging every day.

This work is mission critical. Belonging isn’t about fitting in — it’s about feeling safe enough to stand out, take risks and develop confidence in one’s own voice. This work allows our students to stretch, grow and thrive, knowing — as my colleague and collaborator, Krista Koekkoek wrote — that they are enough, exactly as they are, and Havergal is better because of them.

And when they step into the world, that deep sense of belonging will empower them to lead with courage, create spaces that uplift others and be prepared to make a difference.

Indigenous Ways of Being and Knowing in Grade 5/6 Integrated Arts

Rachel Read, Junior School Integrated Arts Teacher, and Marissa Magneson, Cree-Métis Artist Educator

We are called, as individuals and as a school community, to build relationships and understandings with all cultures in our school community, Turtle Island and beyond. These diverse, vibrant and contemporary cultures build the vibrant community and culture of Havergal College. Within the Grade 5 and 6 Integrated Arts program, we have made Indigenous Ways of Being and Knowing a central part of our student experience through Indigenous Arts and Culture. Integrated Arts is founded in a “culture-first” pedagogy of arts education where music, dance, drama and visual arts flow from a deeper understanding of culture.

We have been fortunate to work with Indigenous artists who introduce cultural understandings alongside specific artistic or cultural expertise. Cree-Métis artist educator Marissa Magneson teaches the culture, history, music and art-making of the Métis; Métis Firekeeper Sabastian Koprich shares cultural teachings of the sacred fire and Indigenous ceremonies; and Cree-Métis composer and songwriter Mathew Magneson shares music as a form of personal expression.

This two-year relationship begins with cultural teachings and protocols rooted in reciprocity with the land as an introduction to Métis artistic practices, such as bead-art painting techniques inspired by Christi Belcourt. Students follow this learning with Métis beading skills, which culminates in Grade 6 students designing, crafting and beading their own deer-hide moccasins. This activity is a reflection of their learning and ongoing journey of walking in a good way in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and the land.

Alongside this learning, students experience traditions and culture. This includes musical performances from our students, led by Marissa, and performances from Mathew at school assemblies and during class. In Grade 5, students participate in a full moon ceremony and a sacred fire on the land with Marissa and Sabastian in honour of grandmother moon.

Students are encouraged to explore and reflect on their personal stories and experiences to better understand their own rich and diverse heritage and personal identities. At Havergal, it is important that students feel a sense of belonging; that they feel seen, safe and equipped with the tools that allow them to thrive while learning about and exploring the diversity of each other, our community and beyond. Indigenous Ways of Being and Knowing provides students the time and space to explore these concepts in authentic and meaningful ways while further developing reciprocal relationships with one another, our school community and beyond.

Building Belonging Across the Globe

Alexandra Zourntos, Associate Director of Admissions

Havergal is known for its strong sense of community and belonging, an intangible yet ever-present force that resonates in our hallways and classrooms as well as in the relationships we cultivate. We reflect this core value in our thoughtful and comprehensive Boarding admissions process, which takes into account the entire family. We take great pride in designing and executing a process that ensures every family feels welcomed and is seamlessly integrated into our community.

When working with Boarding families, we recognize the importance of personalizing each interaction. We do this by taking the time to understand the family’s dynamics, cultural practices and specific needs, ensuring we provide the necessary support for a smooth academic, social and emotional transition. This strong foundation of trust is crucial in fostering a sense of belonging for students and their families once admitted.

The admissions process at Havergal is truly a team effort, with contributions from various departments working together on decision-making and onboarding. Whenever possible, we connect prospective families with current Boarding families, who share their personal experiences and provide a range of resources before the student’s arrival, from insights on our culture and values to helpful packing tips. Once the student arrives, our dedicated Boarding staff works closely with families to ensure they feel fully supported. From orientation and mentoring programs to regular check-ins, we focus on helping students adjust academically and socially, empowering them to thrive in our vibrant community.

While every step of our process is rewarding, some moments stand out as particularly meaningful. One of our favourites is connecting with parents after enrolment and hearing, through their eyes, how much their daughter has flourished. The relationships we have with our Boarding families continue long after graduation, reflecting the strong, welcoming community that Havergal is known for.

This is my way of showing pride for our school and fostering a sense of connection with those around me. From my first Spirit Week in Grade 3, it became clear to me that this week is more than just a fun tradition: it is a way to express my pride and bring energy to the school community.

When the school elected me as Clubs and Spirit Prefect, I felt a deep sense of honour and responsibility. This wasn’t just a title, but an opportunity to make every student feel valued and empowered to express their spirit with pride. This year’s Spirit Week was one of the most memorable, filled with creative themes, high energy and even a few unexpected surprises. From the chaotic fun of Crazy Clash Day to the nostalgia of Generations Day, the school came alive with enthusiasm and laughter. The Spirit Week assembly brought everyone together in celebration, and Hockey Day saw students proudly decked out in green and gold, cheering louder than ever. Even when a snow day forced us to reschedule the Grade Cheer Off, the spirit never wavered. Instead, it was a reminder of what this week is truly about, not just the competitions and costumes, but the sense of community and school pride that unites us all. Seeing the joy and excitement on everyone’s faces throughout the week reaffirmed why spirit has always been such an important part of my Havergal experience.

As I step into my next chapter in June, I know the spirit I’ve found at HC will always be a part of me, giving me the confidence to take on new adventures, the heart to build meaningful connections and the energy to bring joy and enthusiasm wherever I go.

Message from Admissions

Maggie Houston-White, Executive Director of Strategic Enrolment Management, and Emily Simms-Brown, Director of Admission

As we gear up for Havergal’s beloved Spirit Week, the halls are buzzing with students coming together as a whole grade to plan their cheers, which will show their spirit as they represent their cohort at the activities planned by the student leaders. This week is deliberately set in February, when the bright sunny days of spring can feel a bit of a long way off. Spirit Week is a great way for our students to come together as a community, demonstrate their House and school spirit and support all of our wellbeing with some fun. Our commitment to Wellbeing is a critical pillar of our strategic plan “Empowering Excellence,” which you can read about in this issue of Havergal Highlights

We are also aware of the excitement that is building for families as Offer Day draws near. All families will be hearing from Havergal on Friday, February 21 and acceptances are due back on Wednesday, February 26. We appreciate all of the time and effort our applicant families have put into this process. The caliber of candidates and their families have been outstanding. We know the future is a bright one.

Sincerely,

Maggie & Emily

Enacting Our Commitment to Wellbeing

Krista Koekkoek, Vice Principal of Student Life & Wellbeing

The message of prioritizing wellbeing is everywhere. You can’t listen to a podcast, scroll your social media or roam a bookstore without words about prioritizing self-care or putting yourself first. And to what end? It’s a challenging time to consider what it means to be well.

I read a piece this year by Dr. Tracy Dennis Tiwary, a researcher and professor in psychology and neuroscience at City University in New York. In it, she confirms that we now know more about mental health and wellbeing than at any other point in history. We have more strategies, tactics, support people and self-help books than ever before.

Yet, rather than have less “unwell” in the world, we seem to be experiencing increasingly more. And despite what some will say, there actually is no single cause for it. Not our phones. Not our social media. Not our lack of getting out for a run this morning or having protein in our shakes.

There is not one thing that has single-handedly hurt our wellbeing.

Dr. Tiwary wonders—and so do I—if we have all tried to pursue ‘too much’ when it comes to our mental health. Are we overdoing it when it comes to figuring out how to feel okay in the world? Is there just too much pressure to live our best life?

What if we reminded ourselves and taught our girls that we are enough?

I am going to say that again. We are enough. Right now, in this current moment, we are all we need to be.

And we need you. We need your daughters. The world needs your daughters just as they are. Not fixed. Not perfect. Not changed. Not self-helped out.

They are enough.

What if wellbeing is not a task or an item on a checklist but a way of being? Enter Havergal’s Commitment to Wellbeing. A commitment that puts strengths and growth, compassion, self-awareness and living a values-aligned life at the centre of its priorities. It’s not a task, but a way of being.

So we commit at Havergal to not touting the latest trends in “happiness,” but rather preparing young women for the inevitable ups and downs of life, and having the confidence to authentically be their whole selves, setting the boundaries they need to feel fulfilled, contributing to something greater than themselves, with a curiosity for learning and growing.

Thriving Together—Nurturing Wellbeing in the Junior School

Junior School Head Kate White and Assistant Head Liz Watt

The wellbeing of our students is at the heart of everything we do at Havergal. Why? Because we know that a healthy and fulfilled child is better equipped to learn, grow and thrive. When students feel safe, supported and valued, they are more engaged in their academic work and develop the confidence to take on new challenges. Prioritizing wellbeing also strengthens their social-emotional skills, such as empathy, resilience and teamwork, which are essential for building strong relationships and navigating life’s ups and downs. In order for this to happen, students need to develop a toolkit of strategies that they can use not only now, but also in the future.

This year, we shifted from having a “Thrive Week” early in the year, to having a series of “Thrive Days” throughout the year, where we have introduced our students to a variety of tools they can use and practise. The purpose of these days is to:

  • Normalize the human experience of emotion and reduce stigma.
  • Acknowledge that wellbeing is unique and diverse.
  • Support reflection and awareness building in what community members need to be well.
  • Provide new tools/skills to cope with life’s challenges.
  • Align with Havergal’s Commitment to Wellbeing.

On Thrive Days, all members of the Junior School community, including teachers, take part in a variety of activities aimed at exploring new tools for their wellbeing toolkit. While we recognize that not every strategy works for everyone, our goal is to offer an opportunity for individuals to try new approaches, refresh their resources and swap out what no longer serves them. Many of these tools are inspired by student suggestions on what has been most effective for them, and several students actively contribute by leading Thrive activity sessions. Some examples of activities include cosmic yoga, mindful colouring, guided meditation, gratitude sessions, beading, chalk colouring with music, origami, exercise classes and more!

We believe that fostering wellbeing is not a one-time effort but an ongoing journey. By embedding practices that prioritize mental, emotional and social health into our everyday lives—especially through initiatives like Thrive Days—we are creating a culture where students feel safe to explore, experiment and build the skills they need to flourish.

A Holistic Approach to Wellbeing in Grades 7 to 9

Kirsten Uhre, Director of Guidance, Student Support & Wellbeing

Our Grade 7 to 9 Guidance Team is dedicated to fostering student wellbeing as a foundation for academic success. Grounded in research and driven by a holistic approach, the team—made up of Ms. Winograd, Ms. Steele and Ms. Randall—provide specialized, comprehensive support through one-to-one meetings, Form activities and grade-wide sessions. Topics discussed by this passionate team of experts include time management, study skills, friendships, co-curricular activities, mental health and academic planning.

Developmentally appropriate, specialized support is tailored to the unique needs of each grade cohort. Students in Grade 7 are welcomed at the beginning of the year by their Guidance Counsellors via individual meetings, where they are given time and strategies to adjust to the transition into middle school.

This personalized care continues as students move through Grade 8 alongside their designated counsellor. Time is spent with Grade 8 students exploring their interests and passions through the course selection process.

The Grade 7 to 9 Guidance Team also runs the First Six Weeks program for new-to-Grade 9 students, which is a unique program at our school. Students who are new to the school meet with their Guidance Counsellor once per week for the first six weeks of school to ensure that they are adjusting well to the demands of high school and connecting with new friends. More specialized academic counselling takes place with Grade 9 students as they continue to explore a variety of interests and course pathways. This work is purposefully designed to enhance and take into account the importance of each student’s emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing.

Through their unwavering commitment and thoughtful approach, our Guidance Team plays an integral role in helping ensure students are ready for the opportunities and challenges of the middle years so they can thrive.

Havergal’s Student-Led Wellbeing Council

Hadley Michael, Wellbeing Prefect

Wellbeing at Havergal is guided by a dedicated team that includes a student-led Wellbeing Council. This council recognizes that wellbeing is deeply personal, reflecting the unique interests and needs of every student. By embracing a holistic approach, the council strives to support all aspects of student life including physical, mental and emotional health.

Unique to this year, the Wellbeing Council has been working on planning and promoting Thrive Days, monthly student-led initiatives designed to prioritize meaningful activities that promote happiness, health and connection within the school community. Thrive Days are created in collaboration with key pillars of Havergal life. For example, in partnership with the Forum for Change Council, we hosted a post-Halloween pumpkin smash to symbolically release negative self-talk while repurposing some pumpkins in the process. Currently, the Wellbeing Council is focused on organizing the Hockey for Health initiative, alongside the Sports Council, which will emphasize growth and resilience in sports by continuing the conversations about mental and physical health after Hockey Day.

An exciting new development within Havergal Wellbeing this year is the community partnership with Jack.org, a charity dedicated to empowering youth to promote mental health awareness through talks, summits and fundraising events.

Through Jack.org’s “Be There” program, council members have been engaging in training modules to deepen their understanding of mental health and learn to recognize signs of struggle. This partnership marks the beginning of an impactful journey toward building a more informed and compassionate school community.

As the Wellbeing Prefect, I am honoured to work alongside a dedicated team to ensure that every student feels valued and supported so that they can thrive at Havergal. Together, we hope to inspire open conversations about mental health, foster a stronger sense of community and empower everyone to take steps toward promoting their health and wellbeing in all aspects of their lives.

Health Centre Manager and Lead Nurse

As the Manager and Lead Nurse of the Health Centre at Havergal, Ms. Kanner’s focus is on building a healthy, well community at Havergal. With 16 years of pediatric nursing experience, including 12 years in neonatal and pediatric critical care and experience teaching nursing students at the university level, she brings specialized care, expertise and compassion to the school environment.

In addition to physical health, mental wellbeing is a priority in her work. Ms. Kanner understands the pressures students face and is available to provide a listening ear, guidance on stress management and support for mental health challenges. She works closely with guidance counsellors, social workers and other staff to ensure a holistic approach to each student’s wellbeing. Boarding students often face additional challenges being away from home. Whether it’s helping them navigate homesickness, managing long-term health conditions or simply providing a comforting presence during a difficult time, she ensures they have the care and attention they need to feel safe and supported.

In addition to direct care, Ms. Kanner teaches CPR and First Aid to all faculty members, equipping them with the skills needed to handle emergencies with confidence.

As a mother of three, promoting a culture of wellbeing is a core value of hers. She encourages both students and staff to prioritize their own health and wellness. She is proud to contribute to creating a healthy, supportive environment at Havergal.

Message from the Chair of the Board of Governors

Jill Fraser

New Year’s greetings from the Board of Governors. We extend our warmest wishes for a happy and healthy 2025.

As the second term begins, we should pause to reflect on the eventful start of the school year. We commenced 2024-25 with excitement for the many engaging co-curricular and athletic events and for the opportunity to once again join together as a community for Celebration Saturday and Reunion Weekend later in September. Thrive Week returned to promote mental health awareness and highlighted some of the strategies and skills that students can use to improve their wellbeing. A number of student-initiated Junior School Wellbeing Clubs emerged after our initial Thrive Days this year, including the Grade 3 Wellbeing Kids Club, the Grade 4 Positivity Club and the Grade 5 Beading Club. There are 14 winter athletic teams and 198 athletic spots and we’re excited that 224 athletes have participated in 464 athletic spots since September. We hosted our first Gator Games of the year in the Fall, with our teams supported by students proudly wearing green and gold! First term closed with a series of Christmas concerts. The traditional Upper School Carol Service held at St. Paul’s Bloor Street Church was a delightful evening of carols and lessons. The Grade 1 to 6 Christmas Concert was a beautiful event also held at St. Paul’s Bloor Street, while the Kindergarten Holidays Concert was held in the Junior School. It was, once again, a fantastic way to move into the holiday season!

As we plan for the next school year, we want to remind parents/guardians that the opportunity to apply to serve on the Board of Governors or a Board Committee is currently open. The Board of Governors Application Form is located here, and I encourage you to become involved. This year, the Board is especially interested in identifying potential candidates with one or more of the following: governance experience serving on a philanthropic board and/or charitable foundation; capital infrastructure and development oversight experience; CEO/C-suite experience; and marketing, communications and public relations management experience. The application due date is Friday, February 7, 2025. Applications will be reviewed in February/March with interviews taking place in March/April for those selected. Additional details on the role and responsibilities of Board and Committee members can be found here. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

We have accomplished great things so far and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve throughout the rest of the year. I’m delighted to see our school values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage at work in the school and our community. Thank you all for your efforts and support as we navigate 2025 together.

Sincerely,

Jill

Kayla Kanner

Principal’s Message

Dr. Katrina Samson

We are constantly inspired by our community’s commitment to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students, and this is made possible through your unwavering support. As you know, we carefully manage our financial resources, with tuition covering essential operating expenses. However, it is your generosity that enables us to go beyond the basics, funding the innovative programs and enhanced facilities while enriching experiences that define a Havergal education. Philanthropy ensures we continue to elevate our students’ journeys, helping them reach new heights in academics, arts, leadership and, notably, athletics.

As part of our Ahead of the Game campaign, we are excited to bring our Athletic Program up to the exceptional standards of our academics. Our mission is clear: to provide our students with an environment that empowers them to be strong, confident and resilient, both in the classroom and on the field. By enhancing our athletic facilities, programs and coaching staff, we are setting a new benchmark for girls’ athletics, fostering physical and mental strength and instilling lifelong skills. Athletics are not only about competing; they’re also about building character, developing resilience and strengthening teamwork.

As we look forward to the release of our Annual Report, you will see the tangible impact of your contributions, from state-of-the-art learning environments to programs that sustain financial support, making a Havergal education accessible to more students than ever. Donations to financial support remain a cornerstone of our community’s philanthropy, which is funded by families, Old Girls/Alums and faculty and staff alike. Your gifts reflect a shared commitment of ensuring all deserving students can thrive at Havergal, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Together, we are creating an inclusive, dynamic school environment where every student has the opportunity to excel. Join us in continuing to shape the future of Havergal as we continue to build a legacy of excellence, opportunity and strength.

In the coming weeks, we will share our 2023-24 Annual Report. Inside are highlights of the remarkable progress, achievements and stories that have defined our year. Packed with insights, inspiring milestones and a look ahead at what’s to come, it’s a reflection of the collective impact we’ve made together.

With gratitude,

Katrina

Call for Applications for the Havergal College Board of Governors

Michael Copeland, Chair of the Governance Committee

I have the pleasure of writing to the Havergal community on behalf of the Governance Committee of the Board of Governors, as this is our formal call for applications to serve on the Board or a Board Committee.

The primary responsibility of the Governance Committee is to ensure that the Board is well-equipped to carry out its oversight role with respect to the College. Part of that responsibility is continually evaluating how well the Board and its committees carry out their mandates and advance the College’s educational mission.

One of the most important things the Governance Committee works on is identifying and nominating strong candidates for the Board and its committees. This is an ongoing and dedicated effort as we strive to maintain a roster of broadly qualified candidates. Using a competency-based model, the committee identifies skills and constituencies to be considered as we plan for the future.

In reviewing applications, the Governance Committee looks to constitute a Board that balances a mix of competencies and experience, Old Girls/Alums, current and past parents, and independent members. The Board is also committed to ensuring diverse cultural representation and reflecting a wide range of skills and experiences that align with our competency framework.

In assessing applications, the Governance Committee favours no particular professional background over another, but we frequently seek specific areas of experience and expertise. This year, the committee is especially interested in identifying potential candidates with one or more of the following: governance experience serving on a philanthropic board and/or charitable foundation; capital infrastructure and development oversight experience; CEO/C-suite experience; and marketing, communications and public relations management experience.

Governors are volunteers and must be willing to commit the substantial time, effort and energy necessary to fulfil the role and serve the school. It is also expected that a Board Governor will make Havergal one of their top philanthropic priorities.

If you are interested in being considered for the Board or a committee, please let us know by completing the Board of Governors Application Form and submitting your CV to the Governance Committee by Friday, February 7, 2025. Additional details on the role and responsibilities of Board and committee members can be found here.

Girl holding up a sign that says "Girls who play sports become women who lead."

“When you participate in sports, you are unconsciously learning important life skills for the workforce. Are you leading a warm-up or a team huddle? You are learning public speaking and leadership skills. Did you finish a tough practice or lose a close game? You are learning perseverance, work ethic and reflection. Did your coach give you feedback? You are learning how to receive and interpret feedback for personal growth. It is not surprising to learn about the number of C-suite female executives who were also athletes in their youth.”

Havergal’s Ahead of the Game Campaign

Recognizing the Importance of Girls in Athletics

Empowering girls through outdoor education and sports has long been a point of pride at Havergal. Athletics, outdoor education and play are instrumental in nurturing essential life skills including courage, teamwork and goal setting. As such, we are excited to announce the commencement of Havergal’s Ahead of the Game athletics campaign, which prioritizes athletics for girls and women.

Athletics is at the heart of the Havergal community, with 580 students participating in at least one sport in the 2023-24 school year. This campaign will revolutionize athletics at Havergal for years to come. Key aspects of the campaign include a new turf field and seasonal dome on the Cohen Field, as well as brand new tennis courts with a lounge and seating areas to encourage spectatorship.

By guiding a growing interest in sport and physical activity, this campaign aims to:

  • Foster personal growth, wellbeing, teamwork, leadership and future career success.
  • Create a supportive environment where every student can thrive academically and personally while developing the skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
  • Promote equity by increasing participation in sports among girls, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to gain from the invaluable lessons and benefits that athletics can offer.
  • Instil lifelong habits of physical fitness and wellness among our students.

We are grateful to members of our community who have supported the campaign to date. Your belief in our vision is vital in our efforts to transform athletics and outdoor education at Havergal, elevating athletics to the same standard at which we hold academic excellence.

Mission Critical: Financial Support

Maggie Houston-White, Executive Director of Enrolment Management

Havergal College is more than a place of learning; it is a hub of innovation, community and opportunity for young women who want to make a difference in the world. Behind every program and every transformative student experience lies the critical support of financial contributions. Investing in girls’ education is one of the most impactful ways to transform societies and drive global progress. Educated girls grow into empowered women who contribute to stronger families, healthier communities and more equitable economies.

Financial Support at Havergal allows us to offer admission to students who might otherwise be unable to access a Havergal education and allows us to support current Havergal families who have encountered a change to their circumstances, making tuition unaffordable. Financial Support is about shaping futures, our future, and ensuring that a Havergal education is accessible for the young women who have the drive, skill and talent to impact our ever-changing world.

We believe that the strength of our community is rooted in the diversity of experiences, perspectives and backgrounds that each student and family brings to our school. To maintain this inclusive and enriching environment, Financial Support plays an essential role.

We are deeply grateful to the Havergal community—parents, Old Girls/Alums and friends—whose generous contributions make our Financial Support and Scholarship programs possible. Our donors are investing not just in the future of individual students, but in the legacy of Havergal College. By educating girls at Havergal, we not only equip them with the tools to succeed, but also create ripple effects that benefit generations to come. Supporting girls’ education is not just a moral imperative—it is a strategic move toward a brighter, more inclusive future.

Giving Tuesday

Today is Giving Tuesday! Every day is a special day to give, but Giving Tuesday inspires generosity with a common mission to create a world where giving back is part of everyday life. The movement started in 2012 and has been gaining momentum ever since. Keep an eye on Havergal’s social media channels today.

We hope you’ll consider Havergal when giving any size gift on Giving Tuesday. Donations to The Havergal Fund are directed to the school’s areas of greatest need and may include student financial support, faculty professional development, tools and resources to support academic curriculum innovation, efforts toward environmental sustainability, program enrichment in the arts and athletics, and our focus on wellbeing. We strive to make a Havergal education inclusive and accessible for more students. Gifts of any amount are appreciated at https://bit.ly/GivingTuesHC.

To receive a 2024 tax receipt, your gift must be received by December 31, 2024. Every donation will have an impact on our ability to enhance or expand opportunities for bright minds.

HCPA members at the Ivy Market.

Thank You for Supporting Ivy Market!

On November 21, the HCPA officially ushered in the holiday season with our third annual Ivy Market. This year, in addition to the popular HCPA Marketplace, the event featured a curated selection of local vendors, giving our HC community the perfect opportunity to shop for unique gifts, stock up on spirit wear and enjoy festive music by student performers. Attendees also had the chance to mingle with fellow parents and catch up over coffee in the cozy café corner. It was a joyful occasion that brought together our community to celebrate the season and support local businesses.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Ivy Market a success! Whether you volunteered your time, stopped by to shop or supported the event in any way, we couldn’t have done it without you. Your involvement truly made a difference and we are so grateful for your support!

Specifically, we would like to thank: Martha Fell, who organized an impressive selection of vendors; and Mahnaz Hamidzadeh, who chaired the HCPA Marketplace. An extra special thanks goes to Alex Hodgson, Liz Phipps and Arti Patel as co-chairs for their hard work and creativity in spearheading the whole event. We also couldn’t have done this without the tireless support of HC’s Manager of Parent Relations, Lauren Farquharson, and Executive Director, Strategic Enrolment Management, Maggie Houston-White.

All funds raised by Ivy Market will be put toward the HCPA’s fundraising goals. Photos of the event can be viewed here.

Cultivating Confidence and Character Through Junior School Athletics

Anna Bartlett, JS Athletic Director

When you pass through the Junior School gyms and fields during Phys-Ed and team practices, you will see students being physically active and having fun. At first glance, it may seem like just any other school, but what sets Havergal apart is how we prioritize student wellbeing and encourage young students to get involved in athletics at an early age.

Getting kids physically literate at a young age is important in building their confidence and motivating them to try new activities later in life. When children learn basic skills such as running, jumping and throwing and specific skills such as dribbling, hitting and shooting at a young age, they are more likely to maintain an active lifestyle into adulthood. This physical competence builds a foundation for exploring a variety of sports and activities, leading to increased confidence and willingness to take risks.

Havergal’s aim is to make it safe to try out different activities, which allows students to be brave instead of perfect. While they are on teams, they learn how to make decisions quickly and understand how to bounce back. They learn how to lead. They learn focus and perseverance, which translates into better study habits and academic success.

At Havergal, early athletic involvement is a cornerstone of character development and builds the students’ confidence into the Upper School and beyond, supporting lifelong success. Through our Athletics Program, we’re not just developing athletes, we’re nurturing confident resilient individuals who aren’t afraid to challenge themselves. As we continue to foster this supportive athletic environment, we’re proud to see our Junior School students grow into well-rounded individuals who approach athletic and academic challenges with enthusiasm and determination.
