Message from the Upper School Athletics Director

Ms. Carla Di Filippo

Hello Gators,

This past spring season was more wet, cold and windy than what we were used to, but we persevered and, as usual, had a great time representing the green and gold. Havergal saw 24 teams take to the fields, pitches, diamonds and courts with more than 380 students playing on a sports team this spring. Even though it rained during most games, there were always smiles and laughs to be heard. Our annual staff vs. students softball game took place two weeks ago during lunch. The Senior Softball Team came out strong with big hits and perfect fielding. This team was determined to flip the script on the staff motto: “staff don’t lose” and win the coveted trophy. Congratulations to the team on their big win!

This spring Havergal took home six CISAA championships in Softball (U14 and Junior), Ultimate (U14) and Track and Field (U13, U14 Overall, Novice — Grade 9). Congratulations to Anjola Hopkins (‘28), Victoria Ogunlaja (‘28) and Niahm Richards (‘28), who qualified at the OFSAA (provincial) championship in Track and Field!

Our Rowers had one of their best seasons to date with more than 20 medals won over three regattas. Recently at the CSSRA’s (Canadian Nationals) in St. Catherines, the team took home first in JR 63kg 8+, third in Sr Women’s 2, and second in Jr Women’s 63kg 4+. The Sr. Women’s 8 and Jr Women’s just missed the podium both by less than a second.

On Tuesday, May 27, we celebrated all of our spring MVPs and Coaches Award recipients. The spring assembly provided the Athletics Department the chance to honour our most prestigious awards: Athletes of the Year and the Sonia Labatt Armstrong Sportsmanship Cup. Congratulations to Lucy Falconer, Middle School Athlete of the Year, Claire Hicks, Junior Athlete of the Year and Rachel Dirks, recipient of both the Suzanne Curtis Memorial Trophy (Senior Athlete of the Year). The Sonia Labatt Armstrong Sportsmanship Cup went to Maddy Evans. View the full list of spring award recipients here. Grads who participated in athletics over 80% of their time at Havergal were also honoured (view the Overall Contribution to Athletics Award here). Congratulations to all award winners!

I would like to thank the teachers, staff and community members who spend time coaching at Havergal. We are truly blessed to have such dedicated and experienced coaches leading our teams. A huge shout out to Peyton, our Gator Zone editor, for all of your work this year. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge two of the most kind, funny, passionate, hard-working, green and gold in their blood people at Havergal: Kaya and Maddy. It was an absolute pleasure to watch you both lead SpoCo, support each other and continue to make Havergal Athletics so special.

Have a wonderful summer Gators and see you in September.

Message from the Junior School Athletic Director

Ms. Anna Bartlett

Athletic excellence soared to new heights this spring as Havergal students demonstrated exceptional skill, determination and sportsmanship across multiple disciplines!

For the first time in the Junior School, we had co-ed teams as Havergal joined with Crescent School to form two highly successful Havercrest U12 Ultimate Teams.

The U12 Softball Team had quite the season with a depth of seriously trained pitchers. They demonstrated exceptional teamwork and determination, improving steadily throughout the season and showcasing impressive skills in every game.

Our Track and Field athletes achieved remarkable results at the CISAA Championships. In Grade 5, Charlotte Goldthorpe broke a CISAA record by running the 200m in just 30.73 seconds! Charlotte and Halle came first and second in the 400m, while Brooke claimed first in high jump. The U11 Relay Team secured a victory! In Grade 6, Clara and Abby placed first and second in high jump, while Carol, Arianna and Celine swept the podium in U12 Discus.

The U10 and U9 Basketball/Soccer Squads showed tremendous growth this season, developing fundamental skills in both sports. Our youngest athletes in the U8 MultiSport Squad enthusiastically explored various activities, building a strong foundation for future athletic endeavors.

As we celebrate these remarkable achievements, we look forward to carrying this momentum of excellence, teamwork and Havergal spirit into the upcoming school year!

A Message from the Student Editor

Peyton Furgiuele

This year at Havergal has been filled with exciting games, team bonding and many memories. I have had the joy of helping to share just some of the stories from our athletics. The spring season is one of my favorites at HC because everyone is so eager to get outside and play the sports they love. Whether it is the Softball Team on the pitch or the Rowers on the water, people come alive when the spring sports commence. It’s been amazing to see the joy that sport continues to bring to our community.

I want to give a huge thank-you to Ms. D. for all she gives to athletics at Havergal. She always goes above and beyond and we would not have the opportunities we do without her. As well, thank you to our incredible Sports Prefects, Maddy and Kaya, for the leadership and heart they’ve poured into Havergal Athletics this year. Their commitment to building an inclusive, empowering and spirited environment has made such a meaningful impact, especially for young women discovering their strength and confidence through sport.

To all of the athletes, thank you for showing up and working together to accomplish your goals; you’ve created memories that will last far beyond this season. And finally to our Gator Zone writers: thank you for capturing those stories with creativity and enthusiasm. You’ve helped communicate these stories so our community can see what Havergal has to offer.

As we wrap up the spring season, I hope this edition of the Gator Zone gives you a chance to reflect, celebrate and feel proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Every story or anecdote I’ve heard about the incredible female athletes at Havergal has truly made me even more proud to be a Gator. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Go Gators!

Message from the Sports Prefects

Maddy & Kaya

It’s hard to believe the school year is already coming to a close and, with it, another incredible chapter of Havergal Athletics is over. As we wrap up our final edition of Gator Zone, we’re so excited to celebrate a fantastic spring season filled with sunshine, school spirit and standout performances.

At the start of the year, we set a clear goal: to make everyone at HC feel comfortable joining a sports team and embracing their inner athlete. We wanted Havergal Athletics to be a space where every student could discover their passion, feel empowered and find a sense of belonging through sport. We’re proud to say we’ve made meaningful strides toward that vision.

Events like Gator Days, our daily Instagram content and Athlete of the Week have all helped strengthen the HC spirit. These moments didn’t just celebrate athletic accomplishments, they brought us closer together as a community. One of our favourite additions this year was our Gators Do Anything segment, which encouraged students to try new sports, even if they didn’t feel “good enough.” The feedback has been amazing and we hope to see it grow on Instagram even more in the years ahead.

Thank you to every student who participated in, or supported, Havergal Athletics. Your energy, encouragement and enthusiasm helped build a culture that’s welcoming, spirited and truly one of a kind. We also want to recognize the people who make athletics at Havergal possible: our amazing coaches. Not only do they show up every day, but they also bring energy, dedication and heart to everything they do. Their constant support and belief in us as athletes mean more than we can put into words. We are so grateful for everything they do.

A huge thank you as well to Ms. D., our incredible Director of Athletics. You pour your heart and soul into this role, working tirelessly behind the scenes with contagious energy and care. You juggle it all while making sure everything runs smoothly — Havergal simply wouldn’t be the same without you. We are so lucky to have you as a mentor and role model!

We also want to thank Erin for keeping everything organized behind the scenes and helping us stay healthy and supported. Thank you both so, so much!

And finally, a massive shoutout to the Sports Council! Without you, none of our events would have been possible. From athletic assemblies to Gator Days to Hockey Day, your hard work brought the vibes and made every moment unforgettable, even when it meant showing up early and putting in extra hours. This year’s council was truly something special; we’re beyond grateful for all the laughs, memories and dedication you brought to the table.

Thank you, Havergal, for giving us the experience of a lifetime and making this year so meaningful. We know Havergal Athletics will continue to grow and thrive, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Thank you Havergal, we love you!

The Spirit of the Game

Audrea Au-Provonost & Callie Slightham

Spring is always a wonderful time: the snow starts melting, the flowers start to bloom and, best of all, it’s the beginning of Ultimate (Frisbee) season! Ultimate stands out as more than just a game; it’s a unique blend of athleticism, teamwork and spirit. Ultimate is an unconventional sport that combines elements of Frisbee, handball and football, with the goal of reaching an end zone.

It’s also the only sport that Havergal participates in with Crescent School, forming Havercrest. This sport helps build bonds between schools and fosters a sense of community. A special feature of Ultimate is that there are no referees. The game relies on the sportsmanship and integrity of its players, and each team completes a survey at the end of the game to rank the other team on spirit and quality of play. Teams also select a player from the other team to receive the “Spirit Award” for the game. This feature helps create a culture of mutual respect and fair competition, which sets Ultimate apart from many other team sports.

Havergal was one of the first schools to participate in the Ultimate league and the program has grown significantly over the years, expanding into Division 1 and Division 2 teams due to the number of students eager to play. We currently have two U14 Teams, one U16 Team, and both a Division 1 and Division 2 U20 Team. Havercrest is fortunate to have Ultimate coaches who have been involved with Team Canada. The U16 Team coach, Brittany Dos Santos, is a player on Team Canada, and the D1 U20 coach, Ms. D., has been one of the team’s Head Coaches and is the Senior Team & World Games Program Advisor for Team Canada for 2025.

This season, Havercrest faced fierce competition from other COSSOT schools, making the games even more exciting and challenging. The highlight of this Ultimate season was Havercrest’s two U14 Teams facing each other in the finals, securing a first and second place medal.

Ultimate has become more than just a spring sport at Havergal, it’s a tradition that brings students together and pushes players to grow both on and off the field. With dedicated coaches, a strong team spirit and a culture rooted in respect and collaboration, the Havercrest Ultimate Teams continue to thrive. Here’s to another successful season and many more to come.

Gator Bus outside of Havergal.

Havergal Pride on Wheels

Kiana Kay & Jordy Meyerowitz

Havergal had an impressive new addition to the Athletics Department this year and it was the infamous Gator Bus. There’s something about the new Gator Bus that just feels right. It’s bold, green and full of HC pride as it rolls down Avenue Road; a true symbol of Havergal spirit on wheels. Whether it’s heading to a hockey game or picking up the Ultimate team, it carries more than just athletes: it carries our pride.

The first time you see it, you can’t help but smile. It’s loud, it’s spirited and it’s everything HC stands for. With the Gator across the side and our green and gold shining bright, it turns every away game into a statement: Havergal came to win.

What makes it even better is how it brings us together. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the team or cheering from the stands, when that bus drives by, we all feel a little more connected, a little more proud. It’s not just about the game, it’s about showing up, representing our school and doing it with heart. The school is constantly getting messages from people in the community that has a Gator Bus spotting all around the city, truly exemplifying the bond the Havergal has through its spirit and athletics

The Gator Bus is more than just a ride: it’s a reminder of our strength, our energy and our community. ROLL GATORS!

Staff Spotlight: Mr. Nichols

Peyton Price & Marlowe Herman

The annual student-staff softball game brought energy, laughter and a healthy dose of competition to Ratcliffe Field. One of the standout members of the staff team was Mr. Nichols, who is a long-standing coach at Havergal. With early experience coaching youth baseball, he developed a deep appreciation for the teamwork, skill and passion that this sport demands. He’s drawn to how softball blends individual moments of excellence with the cohesion of team play, and loves the poetic unpredictability of a game that starts with the ball in the defence’s hands. Mr. Nichols has always been a strong advocate for the growth of women’s sports and has dedicated countless hours to guiding our outstanding Havergal athletes to success.

During the game, many of Mr. Nichols’ former players took the field for the student team, showcasing the talent and determination he helped nurture. After a tough battle, and many years of staff defeat, the students rose up and took the win. Highlights included standout pitching from Peyton and Sadie, strong plays at first base by Catherine and excellent fielding from Kate. One of the most unforgettable moments came when Mia hit a walk-off home run, proving that sometimes the staff DO lose. The game was not without fun and unexpected moments, like when Ms. Jean-Paul overran second base and the original call was overturned. While there may have been complaints about the ump’s (Ms. D) bias, the students kept fighting and came out victorious. In his final year at Havergal, the loss may have stung, but for Mr. Nichols the true reward was seeing the students he mentored grow into confident athletes and leaders. Coaches and mentors like him make softball more than just a game.

Inside Havergal May 2025

Headshot of Katrina Samson.

Principal’s Message

Dr. Katrina Samson

As we close the chapter on this school year, I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who makes Havergal the extraordinary place it is: our students, parents, faculty, staff and Old Girls/Alums. Your care, commitment and connection to the school bring it to life.

This year has been one of remarkable momentum in our classrooms, on our fields and stages, and in our explorations of our local, national and international communities. Together, we celebrated milestones and traditions that knit our community closer, from Celebration Day and Founders’ Day, to the laughter and learning happening daily across our Junior, Middle, Senior and Boarding Schools.

It has also been a year of thoughtful progress. With our strategic plan, Empowering Excellence, we are laying the groundwork for the future of Havergal through the pillars of Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging; Future Ready; and Transforming Tomorrow. These aren’t just ideas — they’re the foundation for everything from student-centred learning in the Junior School, to leadership development in the Middle School, to purposeful programming designed to inspire in the Senior School and Boarding. This work reflects who we are and where we’re going — always with our students at the centre.

To the Class of 2025 — congratulations! You leave an indelible mark on Havergal. Wherever life takes you next, know that you carry the spirit of the ivy with you. As the Grade 11s prepare to take the reins and lead the student body with a commitment to our school values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage, I know they will be inspired by your collective leadership. I look forward to celebrating your accomplishments as a class in a few short weeks.

As you read through this final edition of Inside Havergal for the 2024-25 school year, I invite you to reflect on the role you each played in the life of this great community. Thank you for your energy, partnership and belief in what we’re building together. You make the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Wishing you all a restful and joyful summer.

Warmly,

Katrina

Message from the Board of Governors

Jill Fraser ‘87, Chair of the Board of Governors

As we near the end of another wonderful school year, it’s hard to believe how quickly the time has flown. This will be the final Inside Havergal message from the Board for this academic year. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire Havergal community, including Dr. Katrina Samson, the Senior Leadership Team, faculty, staff and all members of the Board of Governors and Committees for their steadfast support in fostering the exceptional Havergal experience we cherish.

In line with our school’s traditions, we will invite some of our student leaders to the June Board meeting to share their reflections on the year. We are fortunate to welcome students Carol Rong (School Captain), Audrey Gage and Victoria Grignano, and we look forward to learning all about the inspiring things Student Leadership worked on this year.

As we wrap up this school year, we’ve had an array of exciting events that have deepened the love and pride our community shares for our beautiful school. It has been wonderful to see engagement at Havergal’s treasured celebrations, including Celebration Day, Carol Service, Junior School Holiday Concert, Hockey Day and Founders’ Day, as well as various sports and arts events such as CISAA championships and OFSAA inter-school trips.

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) has been actively working on advancing the Strategic Plan, Empowering Excellence, which was introduced to the community last April and continues to receive positive feedback. The framework is built upon three essential pillars: Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging; Future Ready; and Transforming Tomorrow.

Through these pillars, the SLT is working diligently to create actionable goals and initiatives that align with the Empowering Excellence vision. They have engaged with faculty, staff, students and parents to gather insights and feedback, ensuring that the plan resonates with the entire community and addresses their needs. By focusing on these strategic priorities, the SLT is committed to enhancing the overall educational experience at Havergal, ensuring that our students are not only well-prepared academically, but also equipped with the emotional and social tools necessary to navigate their futures successfully.

Lastly, I want to recognize the remarkable Class of 2025! As you stand on the brink of an exciting new chapter in your lives, take a moment to reflect on all that you have achieved during your time here. You have faced challenges, embraced opportunities and grown into the outstanding individuals you are today. Your hard work, determination and resilience have brought you to this significant milestone, and there is so much to be proud of. The friendships you’ve formed and the lessons you’ve learned will serve as a strong foundation as you venture into the future. As you prepare to embark on your next journey, remember to carry forward the values you’ve embraced at Havergal — integrity, compassion and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Embrace the challenges ahead with courage and curiosity, and never forget the supportive community that stands behind you.

And, finally, I would like to remind everyone that your philanthropic support for Havergal has a positive impact on the student experience. For any inquiries regarding charitable giving or Havergal’s current philanthropic priorities, please feel free to reach out to Havergal’s Executive Director of Advancement, Kate Crokam, to learn how you can contribute.

Wishing everyone an incredible summer ahead!

Jill

Building Strong Foundations at the Junior School

Kate White, Head of Junior School

As we approach the end of another school year, the Junior School community hopes that our students found this year engaging as they developed new skills and discovered more about themselves as students and community members.

Looking back, I’m proud of our collective accomplishments. The Junior School continues to build strong foundations for our girls to make meaningful differences:

  • Our inaugural Student-Led Conferences empowered students to take ownership of their learning while creating meaningful parent-student dialogues — a key initiative in our strategic plan, Empowering Excellence.
  • The RULER approach was successfully implemented across all JK to Grade 6 classrooms, alongside our Second Step Program, helping students develop rich emotional vocabulary and essential life skills.
  • More than 80% of students participated in athletics and clubs! From our enthusiastic Kindergarteners joining co-curricular activities for the first time to student-created wellbeing clubs, our community thrived through active engagement.
  • Our partnerships with North York Harvest Food Bank and New Circles demonstrated our students’ compassion, while Grade 6 students showed remarkable leadership by mentoring younger children and leading House activities.

Thank you to the Junior School community for caring and helping every child feel valued and inspired as they embody our core values of courage, compassion, integrity and inquiry in all they do.

A Year of Connection, Growth and Community in the Middle School

Cissy Goodridge, Head of Middle School

This year in Middle School we focused on connection, leadership and a deepened sense of community. During the fall, students had the opportunity to step into leadership roles in new and meaningful ways — whether as Form and Spirit Reps or members of the Senior School student councils. Our lunchtime programs, led by our senior students, offered additional opportunities for students to connect and build confidence through creativity and play.

A strong focus on values and belonging ran through every grade. Students co-created community agreements that reflected what they care about most, setting the tone for respectful, inclusive interactions. With guidance from Nicole Cozier, our Equity Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging workshops helped students understand key concepts like equity and fairness, reinforcing the importance of seeing and valuing one another.

With the introduction of our new digital device policy, social connection flourished. Students embraced face-to-face interaction, participated in lunch events and took part in record numbers at COSSOT socials. This screen-free environment encouraged deeper friendships and a more positive school climate.

Students also engaged with real-world issues through the Win@Social program and the student-led 1,000 Can Initiative. These experiences fostered empathy, digital responsibility and community action by educating students on topics like managing online hate, understanding the ethical use of AI and addressing food insecurity.

Through it all, students explored identity, built skills, shared experiences and had fun, making this a truly memorable and impactful year.

Holistic Development and Student Agency at the Senior School

Deirdre Timusk, Head of Senior School

This year, Havergal’s Senior School was defined by a commitment to holistic student development, focusing on both individual growth and community building. A key initiative was the tailored grade-level programming, from addressing the specific needs of each year from our Grade 9s transition to the Senior School to supporting our Grade 12s as they prepare for post-graduation life. This programming, combined with the development of strong Teacher Advisor (TA) relationships, fostered a supportive environment. As Grade 12 student Kendall O. noted: “Teachers and counsellors are always at the ready and willing to help out if you have questions.”

Student agency was also a central theme this year, with students actively participating in program development and leading initiatives. The House system played a vital role in building community and fostering leadership, which was reflected in the enthusiastic participation at school events — from dances to the Bench Ball tournament and Hockey Day. As Grade 12 student Victoria G. noted: “Win or lose, we always bring the best spirit to our events.” These efforts collectively support our Grads in becoming Havergal Difference Makers by cultivating self-awareness, promoting continuous learning and inspiring students to act as responsible and engaged citizens.

By emphasizing both academic achievement and personal development, Havergal equips students with the confidence, skills and character to navigate future challenges with purpose and resilience.

Building Community in the Boarding School

Nicole Folkes, Head of Boarding

The 2024-25 academic year in the Boarding School has been a reflection of our commitment to student wellbeing, community building and powerful programming.

We began the year focused on our commitment to wellbeing. Our “Care for Me” initiative had students developing personalized wellbeing plans, which helped to foster self-awareness and personal growth. This evolved into “Care for You” in the new year, emphasizing compassion for others and community building. Weekly advisory meetings provided consistent check-ins, creating a nurturing environment.

Our programming flourished with the introduction of a life skills program, equipping students with practical tools for independence such as cooking classes. In addition, students chose from a variety of experiences that allowed them to explore the diverse and culturally rich city of Toronto. Some activities included visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario, touring the CN Tower, attending a Toronto Raptors game and enjoying live theatre productions. Other activities allow an opportunity for students to step outside of their comfort zones and try something new, such as skating at Nathan Phillips Square, learning to rock climb and performing silk aerials.

Throughout the year, Boarding students had the opportunity to work with members of the Havergal community to enrich the student experience. Evening workshops, in collaboration with the Student Support Team, allowed students to reflect on their experiences and self care. Nicole Cozier, our Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, worked with Boarding to create a student-led Community Shared Agreement that helps guide how they engage with and support one another. We also worked with the Forum for Change to plan our first community partnership day of service. Members of the Black Student Alliance collaborated with Boarding to plan and attend a Black History Month celebration dinner. Finally, we had another successful year of the Prefect in Boarding Program, which had Prefects spend four nights immersed in the Boarding Program.

Student leadership played a pivotal role in shaping our community and connections. The creation of the “Boarder Supporter Sticker” allowed the Boarding community to recognize Havergal staff, faculty and students who made a positive impact and supported the Boarding School this year. Additionally, the Boarding Council led spirit events throughout the year that provided fun activities for advisory groups to strengthen their relationships.

As we reflect on this year, we’re proud of the vibrant, supportive community we’ve cultivated in Boarding — one where students thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Once a Gator, Always a Gator

Carol Rong, School Captain

Before starting Grade 12, I was repeatedly told — by teachers, former Grads and my parents — that the year would be over in the blink of an eye. Although I understood that this was probably true, deep down inside me, I couldn’t bring myself to accept this reality. I mean, how could I? The laughter-filled classes, smiles in the halls, green and gold stained faces, and cafeteria cookies can’t disappear that quickly, right?

As much as I have tried to prolong this blink, I’ve finally accepted that my Havergal journey, like all good things, is coming to an end. To commemorate this moment, I want to address the special people who have made Havergal the place I never want to leave.

To Our Teachers

Thank you for always being there for us, before, during and after class, to answer our pressing questions before a test, satiate our curiosity or just to banter. Your efforts to make every topic engaging do not go unnoticed. Know that although you see us less because of our senioritis, we still love and appreciate you in more ways than we could ever express. We are forever grateful for the pivotal role you played in our development and will continue to apply the knowledge (both academic and practical) you’ve imparted to us.

To the Student Body

Your infectious energy, kindness and curiosity are what drive the school culture and make Havergal the place we are all so proud to call our school. Being surrounded by all of you has been my absolute privilege and I’ve never failed to learn something from each of you along the way. Keep bringing your authentic selves and don’t be afraid to jump out of your comfort zone.

To My Fellow Grads

Last year, we eagerly anticipated becoming Grads with our eyes set on new privileges — chairs in Prayers, glistening white blazers, access to the Grad Common Room (GCR), along with a whole slew of other delights. While those things are certainly nice, I’ve come to realize that the true privilege of being a Grad is the cherished time we get to spend together. Over the past nine months, we’ve experienced our last Havergal experiences, from our last first day to our last Carol Service to our last Hockey Day. There’s something about the idea of last — probably the fact that it will never happen again — that bonds. Yapping in the GCR between classes, locking in together before a test and reckoning with the idea of graduating have brought us so much closer, in more ways than we understand. As annoying as it is to open the locked GCR door for one of you pounding on it, I’d do it again in a heartbeat if it means spending another year together.

While it is still slightly unfathomable that I would not be returning to HC next year, I’m grateful for the time I’ve spent behind the ivy walls and I’m excited to see what the next chapter holds. I’m excited to see the people we become and I’m excited to come back and visit (Grads — I better see all of you at the reunions). Once a Gator, always a Gator!

Bye for now,

Carol Rong and the Class of 2025

Throughout her career, Ms. Santiago has been committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. She supports students in all areas of their schooling — academic, social and emotional — and believes in meeting each child where they are. Her educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that all students deserve to be seen, heard and valued, and that school should be a place where every child feels safe and empowered to be themselves.

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Santiago enjoys discovering new restaurants, hidden local spots and exploring and learning cultures through their cuisine.

Inside Havergal

Headshot of Katrina Samson.

Message from the Principal

HCPA Co-Chairs End of Year Message

Maria Puthoff and Lucie Lin

As another dynamic year draws to a close, we are thrilled to share that in 2024-25, the Havergal College Parent Association (HCPA) raised an amazing $35,000! These funds will go toward an exciting new project — one that our team unanimously supported — as part of the Ahead of the Game fundraising campaign. The initiative will bring to life the Vantage Viewpoint Bench, a dedicated space where parents can relax while watching their daughters during team events and connect with other members of the Havergal community.

Together, we’ve achieved so much — fostering connection, supporting our school community and raising vital funds for Havergal College. This year was filled with memorable moments, including Celebration Day, the Ivy Market, the Upper School Gator Gala, the Junior School’s A-mazing Race, Grade 1 and 5 Breakfasts and our much-loved school-wide Moms’ Night Out. We also introduced our first-ever HCPA evening parent socials on campus — an informal, welcoming way for parents to connect. Thank you to all the Grade Reps who helped make these evenings special.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to our incredible event chairs who led their teams to deliver outstanding experiences. Community Ambassadors extended a warm welcome to new families, while our Staff Appreciation Team reminded faculty and staff how much we value their dedication to our daughters’ wellbeing and learning.

We’re also grateful to the many volunteers who powered initiatives such as the Pre-Loved Uniform Drive, Used Textbook Collection, HCPA Marketplace/Spirit Wear Sales, Bake Sales and our auctions at the Gator Gala and Celebration Day.

Whether you held a formal role on the HCPA or simply lent a hand at one of our many events, thank you for your time and commitment. We truly couldn’t have done it without you. Together, we’ve helped build and strengthen the bonds that make our community so special — for new families, long-time members and most importantly, for our girls.

And now, we’re excited to introduce the HCPA Executive Team for the 2025-26 year:

  • Alison Markowitz and Maria Puthoff: Co-Chairs
  • Leah Li: Vice Chair
  • Odie Lamptey: Secretary
  • Colleen Sun: Treasurer
  • Jennifer Pearson: Communications Chair

We look forward to another fun and successful school year ahead!

Used Textbook Collection

US Only

If families would like to donate used textbooks (2021 to 2025) to the HCPA’s fundraising initiatives, there will be a collection on Wednesday, June 11, from 7:30 to 11:30 am, in the Ellen Knox Library in the Upper School. All proceeds from the sale of your books will go toward supporting the HCPA. (A representative from Batner Bookstore will collect the textbooks from Havergal campus and then issue payment to the HCPA after determining which books to buy.  Batner will donate declined books to the Salvation Army.)

Parents can also choose to return textbooks for payment (debit, credit or store credit) directly to Batner Bookstore (180 Steeles Ave. W., Unit 4).

For all returns, Batner only accepts textbooks from 2021 to 2025 that are in reasonable condition, with no watermarks, excessive writing, stains or missing pages — the spine must be intact.

Pre-Loved Uniform Collection

Don’t miss your last chance this school year to clean out closets and donate gently-used uniform items. On Wednesday, June 11, you will be able to drop off your items in the Ellen Knox Library.

Donating uniform items that your children have outgrown and purchasing second-hand items is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint and raise money for the HCPA at the same time.

We gratefully accept the following items (please ensure all are in good condition with no stains/tears):

  • tunics
  • blazers
  • skirts
  • kilts
  • pants
  • dress shirts
  • polo shirts
  • sweaters
  • sweatshirts

Lindsay Santiago

Grade 1 Teaching Assistant

Ms. Santiago is a passionate and experienced Early Childhood Educator with over 15 years of working with children between the ages of 4 to 12. She currently serves as the Junior School Grade 1 Teaching Assistant, a role she has held since 2022. Prior to joining Havergal, she spent 10 years in the public school system, where she worked primarily in full-day kindergarten classrooms, supporting young learners during their critical early years of development.

Havergal’s Future-Ready Approach to Learning

Lindsay Norberg, Deputy Principal

At Founders’ Day this year, Dr. Mary Grant ’01 spoke to students from Grade 1 to 12 about how her experiences at Havergal helped her answer Principal Ellen Knox’s enduring question: “What will you do?”

Much has changed in the world — and at Havergal — since Dr. Grant graduated nearly 25 years ago. But what stood out in her reflections was that Havergal has always been a place focused on helping students develop the knowledge, mindset and skills needed to thrive in an evolving world. For Dr. Grant, this meant accepting support from teachers and peers when presented with a challenge, learning that growth happens outside of our comfort zones, surrounding herself with those who care, showing up early for a tryout, trying hard, being a team player, cheering for others even when disappointed with your results and focusing on progress over perfection.

At Havergal, being future-ready is about cultivating durable skills — those that will serve students well throughout their lives. Skills like creativity, critical thinking, empathy, communication, adaptability and ethical decision-making are developed not in isolation, but through a wide range of experiences across the school. These skills are embedded in classroom learning, co-curricular involvement and leadership opportunities, all supported by exceptional faculty.

Learning at Havergal is active and relational. Students engage with complex ideas, collaborate with peers and reflect on their growth. They ask questions, explore perspectives and develop the confidence to lead with purpose, all within an environment that is both intellectually rigorous and emotionally supportive.

Preparing for the future isn’t about predicting what’s next, it’s about empowering students with the tools to shape their own paths. By nurturing curiosity, compassion and courage, Havergal graduates are ready to make meaningful contributions, wherever life takes them.

Message from the Board of Governors

Obaid Afzal, Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee

The Financial Sustainability Committee is a committee of the Board of Governors. Our primary mandate is to safeguard the long-term financial sustainability of Havergal College. As Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee, I have the pleasure of working in partnership with an engaged group of volunteers, as well as Havergal’s Chief Operations Officer, Laura Sims, and Executive Director of Finance, Johann McCormack.

Our committee members include current and past parents and senior leaders in the community. We look to involve a mix of individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and financial experience. This provides the opportunity to bring a diverse perspective to discussions and broad insights in support of the financial decisions the school makes.

The Financial Sustainability Committee partners with the Property and Development Committee and Havergal’s Senior Leadership Team to ensure the financial plans are in place to support the long-term strategic direction of the school.

Our goal is to oversee and monitor Havergal’s financial plan by balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders, including students, parents, staff and faculty. Like all good financial plans, this is a balancing act requiring careful consideration of a series of trade-offs. The topics that we regularly discuss include:

  • Capital spending that invests in the campus to maintain and enhance our facilities in support of our strategy and programs.
  • Short and long-term financial plans and the funding required to support the wide variety of programs that are fundamental to the student experience at Havergal.

As the Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee, I am happy to report that Havergal continues to be financially strong, benefiting from a disciplined, responsible and thoughtful approach to fiscal responsibility.

The Havergal Difference Maker: Bringing Our Portrait of a Graduate to Life

Lindsay Norberg, Deputy Principal

Havergal has long been guided by a powerful and enduring mission: “Preparing young women to make a difference.” As part of our strategic plan, Empowering Excellence, we asked: What does it truly mean to be future-ready and how can we ensure our graduates reflect that vision?

This led us to redefine our Portrait of a Graduate — a clear framework that articulates the knowledge, skills and dispositions students develop during their time at Havergal. More than a list of outcomes, it brings coherence to our work in academics, wellbeing, inclusive excellence and leadership.

We call this vision the Havergal Difference Maker, which is a name that reflects our mission and the kind of graduate we aim to develop. It serves as a shared reference point that shapes how we design programs, support students and prepare them for life beyond Havergal.

The Havergal Difference Maker is a globally-minded, confident and resilient individual, equipped to navigate complexity, lead with integrity and contribute meaningfully in a world in constant flux.

The vision is grounded in three core pillars:

  • Understanding Myself & Others: Building self-awareness, empathy and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Continually Learning & Growing: Embracing curiosity, reflection and adaptability.
  • Being Inspired to Act: Taking initiative and making a positive impact in communities and beyond.

By defining this shared vision, we align every learning experience at Havergal with the future our students are stepping into, ensuring they graduate ready to lead, adapt and make an impactful difference.

Inside HC-X: Where Futures Take Shape

Adam Caplan, HC-X Director

In HC-X, we’re often asked what the X stands for. Is the X for eXperience? eXploration? Another X-factor? The answer is… Yes!

HC-X designs future-ready programs that emphasize self-development as a key ingredient in lifelong learning, career development and becoming a Havergal Difference Maker.

Through HC-X unique programs such as Digital Wisdom, TC-9 and our expanding suite of Digital Microcredentials, Havergal students orient their futures by exploring, experiencing and experimenting in different areas of their passion, curiosity and skills.

HC-X works in partnership with parents, Old Girls/Alums and leading professionals working in cutting-edge industries to connect students with mentors on a range of topics, such as capital markets, robotics and AI, media production, surgical sciences and climate action.

For example, this year’s newest Digital Microcredential offers students an introduction to Architecture & Design, working with architects at their firm offices downtown and visiting the sites of their projects across Toronto.

Another program is Havergal’s Next Surgeon experience. Participating students joined women surgeons at St. Michael’s Hospital to learn about their journey to medical school, work in the wet-lab and develop surgery skills.

In the Virtual Reality Club, students develop fluency in immersive media and ask questions about how these technologies can be applied for workplace learning and development.

Through these opportunities, students develop mental models of who they can become and they consider potential career pathways while developing their identity, competencies and networks.

Havergal students are invested in their futures and HC-X is all about providing them with opportunities to find their X-factor.

You can learn more about 2025-26 HC-X opportunities in the 2025 summer message parents will receive in late August, or in the Upper School daily announcements starting in September 2025.

Havergal College’s Heart Surgeon Program

Tori Curry, Grade 12 Student

Participating in co-curriculars is a crucial part of my Havergal College experience, and this year I had the incredible opportunity to lead and participate in Havergal College’s Heart Surgeon program.

Along with 25 other students across Grades 9 to 12, I spent two days at St. Michael’s Hospital where we were able to hear from different types of surgeons about their fields of medicine. We heard from a cardiologist, anesthesiologist and trauma surgeon and we even learned how to suture using real surgical tools!

I got involved in this program because it is a very unique and hands-on way to expand my knowledge and understanding of the medical field. I was curious if I wanted to pursue a career in medicine, and this program helped to give me valuable insight into what it takes to be a surgeon and what that lifestyle looks like.

I can confidently say on behalf of all the students who participated in the program this year that we each learned something new and fascinating, and we had an amazing time! Even if the experience taught some students that medicine may not be the best path for them, they still enjoyed it. A highlight of the program for me was watching the St. Michael’s surgical residents suture hearts and then practising ourselves on sponges! If this sounds appealing to you and you are wondering if your future could be in the field of medicine, I urge you to participate next year!

From the Classroom to the Community: Growing Leaders Through Service

Liz Watt, Assistant Head of the Junior School

At the Junior School, future readiness begins with empathy, optimism and real-world experience. Our students aren’t just learning about leadership — they’re living it.

This year, Grade 6 leaders collaborated with our community partner North York Harvest Food Bank, running two successful food drives at the Junior School. They also had the incredible opportunity to volunteer on-site, gaining first-hand experience in community service and making a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.

During their time at the food bank, our Grade 6 students made and labelled boxes, packed food, weighed items, learned about food insecurity and witnessed the direct impact their efforts have on the greater community. Courtney Earl, a Grade 6 student, reflected: “Visiting the food bank was an eye-opening experience for me because I saw what happens to all the food after it has been donated. I had no idea how much work goes on behind the scenes to get the food to those in need. It felt good knowing we were helping something bigger than ourselves.”

Our Grade 5 students were also stepping into leadership this year through a winter initiative with New Circles, a not-for-profit organization that promotes equity and dignity by supporting individuals and families — many of whom are newcomers to Canada. Havergal’s Junior School took part in the New Circles gift-giving program, organizing a successful Holiday Angel drive in which students donated gift cards to five New Circles families. Grade 5 students then visited the organization to sort donations and see clients who directly benefited from their efforts. It was a powerful experience — one that sparked empathy, connection and a deeper understanding of community needs. At Havergal, we believe girls who make a difference are true leaders — and our students are rising to that call with heart and purpose.

These collaborations — fostered through community learning and the involvement of both students and parents, including parent-child volunteering sorts, reflect our belief in reciprocal relationships. Our students don’t just contribute; they gain valuable insights; develop and deepen their cultural understanding; and engage in meaningful work that fosters a strong sense of purpose.

Community and Corporate Fundraising Manager of the North York Harvest Food Bank Judith Reda had this to say about our partnership: “With one in 10 Torontonians now relying on food banks, the role of young change makers has never been more vital. Our partnership with Havergal is a powerful example of what’s possible when education meets action. Through meaningful engagement, Havergal students are not only helping to address urgent needs today — they’re growing into compassionate leaders who will shape tomorrow. We’re honoured to stand alongside the Havergal community in this shared journey of learning, service, and impact.”

We know that preparing students to face tomorrow’s challenges means empowering them today — with heart, voice and action. As educators, it’s our role to create meaningful opportunities where students can see the real-world impact of their actions. This is how we cultivate the skills they’ll need to step beyond our ivy walls and help shape a brighter future.

Ms. Carla Di Filippo

Hello Gators,

Havergal College’s winter athletic season has come to a successful close, marked by outstanding performances and improvement in skill, dedication to practices and teamwork across all levels. Our student-athletes showcased a true joy for being active, a competitive spirit and pride in reppin’ the green and gold.

This winter the school won an impressive nine CISAA Championships. Our swimmers dominated the pool at all age groups with many senior swimmers qualifying for the OFSAA provincial championships. Our volleyball teams showed impressive perseverance to win three volleyball championships. One of our newest teams, the U20 D2 Hockey Team, won their first CISAA hockey championship for the school. This young group of athletes often played teams much older than them. After finishing with a silver for the last two years, the team worked hard each practice and played with impressive teamwork to beat Country Day School 5-4 to win the finals.

Finally, I would like to give a shout out to our newly formed U14 Curling Team and their coaches. It was a treat to watch this young group learn this iconic Canadian sport!

A big thank you to the more than 425 students who played on 28 winter teams. The best part of Havergal Athletics is that trying, playing and competing is woven into the everyday fabric of the school. Sport is for everyone. Thanks must go out to Kaya and Maddy, our Sports Prefects, and the Sports Council for all their hard work this season, especially Hockey Day (our most favourite day of the year). Although we lost in overtime, what holds true year after year is that we love Havergal regardless, we have the VERY best spirit and it is a privilege to have this amazing rivalry.

Finally, I must thank our amazing HC coaches. Our coaches go beyond teaching the technical aspects of a sport; they serve as mentors, motivators and role models who contribute significantly to the overall development of our students. Thank you, coaches, for your time, passion and support of our athletes.

I look forward to some sunshine in the upcoming spring season!

With Intramurals, Squads, Squad Teams and Teams in full swing, the Junior School students are staying active and engaged during these winter months.

The Junior School Athletics Program continues to grow, with an impressive 11 Volleyball Teams and 94 players from Grade 4 to 6 participating this season, which sets a new record for our school! This remarkable number of participants remains the highest in the CISAA, showcasing our students’ enthusiasm for the sport.

Our athletes made a splash at the swim championships, with the women’s team claiming the overall championship title — a testament to their dedication and hard work in the pool.

The U12 Hockey Team proudly represented Havergal on Hockey Day, taking to the ice in front of a crowd of more than 1,500 spectators. The excitement and school spirit were palpable throughout the event.

The sounds of joy continue to echo through our gyms during recess periods, with intramural activities keeping our Grade 1 to 6 students active and engaged. Our Grade 6 leaders have done an outstanding job organizing and leading these sessions, where students enjoy everything from benchball to invasion games while developing their athletic skills.

Looking ahead to spring, our Athletic Program continues to thrive. This year brings an exciting development as our U12 Ultimate Team joins forces with Crescent School to compete in a co-ed format. Students will also have opportunities to participate in U12 Softball, and our robust Track and Field Team athletes will be ready to compete. Multisport and Basketball/Soccer Squads will continue to keep our younger grades active and engaged. The dedication, enthusiasm and growing participation in our Athletic Programs demonstrate how our Junior School students embody the spirit of active, healthy living while building lasting friendships and memories on the courts, fields and ice.

Go Gators!

A Message from the Student Editor

Peyton Furgiuele

As the winter sports season wraps up, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible strength, dedication and passion of our Havergal athletes. This season was not just about competition, it was about resilience, teamwork and the unwavering spirit that defines what it means to be a Gator. From the courts to the ice, the pool to the curling rink, our student athletes gave their all, proving that sports at Havergal is about more than just winning, it’s about community, perseverance and pride.

This winter, Havergal secured an incredible nine CISAA Championships, a testament to the talent and hard work of our athletes and coaches. Beyond the victories, what truly stands out is the energy and enthusiasm that each Gator brought to their sport. Whether it was an early morning practice, a hard-fought match or cheering on teammates from the sidelines, our students embodied what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.

As we celebrate this season, we also recognize the importance of women in sports and the role that athletics play in empowering young women. With International Women’s Day being recognized in this sports season, it’s a perfect time to acknowledge the trailblazers who came before us and the athletes who continue to push boundaries and redefine what is possible. At Havergal, we are not just participants in sport, we are leaders, competitors and changemakers. Every game we play and every challenge we take on is another step forward in breaking barriers and inspiring future generations.

Thank you to our athletes, coaches and supporters for making this season unforgettable. Your dedication and spirit of the game truly shine green and gold representing why Havergal is so special. Thank you to the power of sport, the strength of our community and the bright future ahead.

ROLL GATORS!

Message from the Sports Prefects

Maddy & Kaya

Hey Gators!

We can’t believe the winter season has come to an end. It’s wild to think we only have the spring season left before the school year is over! While we’re sad to say goodbye to winter sports, we’re incredibly proud of everything that was accomplished and we can’t wait to celebrate everyone’s achievements. Whether on the court, ice or trails, this term was nothing short of amazing!

We’ve continued to highlight our incredible athletes through Athlete of the Week on our Instagram, @havergal_gators. This initiative recognizes students in Grades 7 to 12 for their outstanding performance, commitment and leadership in sports!

Our intramural competitions thrived this term! Whether it was grade-level battles or House competitions, the Gators never failed to bring energy and spirit. During Spirit Week, we held a bench ball tournament, where students and staff faced off in an epic showdown. Our House intramurals were also a huge success, featuring Jumbo Volleyball and Extreme Racing, where every House showed up ready to compete and cheer on their peers!

After the December break, we hosted our second Gator Day of the year, where the U20 Volleyball Team put on an incredible game. The turnout in the stands was a true testament to HC’s unwavering school spirit and support!

Of course, no winter season is complete without Hockey Day, and this year’s event did not disappoint. Havergal and BSS battled it out in a thrilling game, with HC just falling short in a shootout. But no matter the outcome, the Havergal community showed up in full force, cheering louder than ever. Mattamy Arena was flooded with green and gold, proving once again that this tradition is a powerful celebration of women in sport. The incredible support will stay with the team forever and serves as a reminder that HC is truly one big family.

Now that we’re two-thirds of the way through the year, it’s time to get excited for the spring season! We know this final term will be just as unforgettable and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Your Sport Prefects,

Maddy and Kaya

U13 Gators Shine in an Unforgettable Season

Peyton Price & Ainsley Nichols

The U13 Basketball Team had a fantastic season. They developed their skills and teamwork both on and off the court. The season came to a memorable end when they had the amazing opportunity to attend the Winnipeg CAIS tournament.

One of the team’s most memorable moments from their trip was playing the home team with a full crowd cheering in the stands. The hard fought game had the spectators at the edge of their seats while the team persevered, stayed focused and built up their lead to win the game. Two members of the team, Maddie and Saachi, were dominant throughout the tournament and ended up winning the skills competition! The team’s hard work and collaboration paid off, winning them the Division II Championship!

Our Gators also had a great time outside of the tournament, where they spent time at The Forks for some amazing food and shopping, and visited the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. They also spent an evening at the Rec Room arcade, which proved to be a great bonding experience for everyone.

Our U13s brought energy, enthusiasm, commitment and HC pride to every single one of their games. We are so proud of them. The future of Havergal basketball is in great hands.

Undefeated: U20 Badminton 2025 Season

Hanna Smith & Isabel Snare

The U20 Badminton Team has been smashing their way to success this year, and have not only been crowned CISAA champions but have also ended the 2025 season undefeated.

The team got off to an unconventional start this winter, unexpectedly falling short of Grade 11 and 12 students to complete their roster. However, by bringing up some exceptional Grade 9 and 10 players to join them, the team quickly began to blaze their way through the competition. For many players, the CISAA finals was the most memorable match of all, a hard-fought battle against Branksome Hall that determined which team got to bring home gold. Ultimately, the score came down to the outcome of a single seat with Havergal emerging victorious.

According to Helen Cao, a Grade 11 student, the team’s success is largely owed to the support of their coaches, Ms. Lau and Coach Lau. Helen, now in her second year of having them as coaches, says, “They are amazing! I feel our coaches really care about us and push all of us to keep improving. They watch each of our games closely, give feedback and run drills that are so tiring but so helpful.” She also cites “team spirit” as being a big contributor to each of their wins. In Helen’s experience, “when you have good chemistry with your partner, you perform better.”

Overall, this season the U20 Badminton Team has definitely demonstrated the skill, grit and teamwork that define a Havergal sports team. Don’t forget to “serve up” a congratulations next time you see a player walking the halls!

Hockey Day 2025: A Game to Remember

Jordy Meyerowitz & Kiana Kay

Hockey Day is one of those events that makes us extra proud to be a Gators. It’s not just about the score, or even the game itself, but when Havergal walks into Mattamy Arena, the energy is unmatched. This year’s Hockey Day had everyone on the edge of their seats, from our spirited crowd in the arena to community members cheering from their homes, every Gator played a huge part in making this day magical.

Our Varsity Team came out strong from the first puck drop, ready for a fierce fight, setting the tone early by scoring a goal in the first period. Bishop Strachan School (BSS) responded quickly, tying it up, but our Gators didn’t back down. During the first period break, our amazing Junior Hockey Team took to the ice. They fought hard and dominated their match against BSS with a 5-1 victory. With that momentum, our Varsity Team came out ready for the second period, scoring an amazing goal. BSS responded quickly by tying up the game, but our Gators didn’t back down. The team fought hard, reclaiming the lead and firing up our crowd before BSS managed to slip in one more goal, pushing the game into an intense shootout. The tension was growing with each player who took their shot, while everyone in the arena held their breath. In a nail biting, five round of shootouts, BSS secured the Hewitt Cup. However, our HC pride shone brighter than ever, reminding us that it’s not about the result, but the energy and spirit we bring to the ice. From the sea of green and gold, to the cheers that echoed through the arena, Hockey Day once again proved why it’s such an integral part of every Gator’s experience. To our incredible HC team, you left it all out on the ice and we couldn’t be prouder. To the Gators who showed up in their face paint and loud outfits and cheered until they couldn’t anymore, thank you for creating a community where we all belong. We can’t wait to see what happens next year, and are so excited to watch this tradition grow.

An Inside Look at Daniella Ponticelli’s Rise in Sports Broadcasting

Sarah McQuillen Younge & Sophia Liu

Anyone who tuned in to the Hockey Day 2025 livestream from Mattamy Arena had the opportunity to hear one of the newest voices in sports commentating, Daniella Ponticelli, as the game’s announcer.

From calling roller derby to the announcing for the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), Ponticelli turned her passion into a profession. Her love for commentating began in 2016 with her desire to share the sport of roller derby with a wider audience because she loves how the sport unites communities and uplifts athletes. Ponticelli found creative ways to share the sport, including by streaming games on Twitch to showcase the intensity of the sport.

She first felt the “bug to be around live sports” in 2018, with her coverage of a professional lacrosse team. When the pandemic hit, she thought that her career in sports had reached its end. However, at that time, the University of Saskatchewan decided to launch a new platform to cover their hockey teams, and were in search of a female announcer to cover the women’s team. Despite never playing hockey herself and not being as familiar with the sport, Poticelli took a leap of faith and began covering hockey. For the first time in university sports history, a private radio company provided full-season coverage for a women’s team, rather than just for select games. After one month, Ponticelli quit her full time job to pursue her passion for calling hockey full time. After building up experience commentating for men’s hockey as well as football, Ponticelli is now calling games at the biggest stage for women’s hockey: the PWHL!

Although this is only the second year of the PWHL, the professional women’s hockey league has become a beacon for players, coaches, staff and fans. The league has set a new standard, proving what is possible and showcasing the incredible talent, hard work and dedication of women in sport. The league’s rapid growth and excitement is paving the way for young girls in hockey, leading to increased participation in the sport and a clear development path. Ponticilli highlights the PWHL’s strong sense of community and dedicated network of people working to grow and elevate the league. She emphasizes the significance and power in amplifying female voices in a male-dominated industry, acknowledging the privilege of using her own voice to showcase the players’ talent.

Ponticelli reflects on her coverage of the Hockey Day live stream, noting that the event serves as a powerful reflection of hockey’s growth and its connection to the larger stage. She says that being a part of such a longstanding tradition and sharing the excitement with both schools was truly special. The spirit and energy was unrivaled, and witnessing the support and love from the community was inspiring.

Reflecting on her journey as a commentator, Ponticelli offers a powerful piece of advice: if something keeps calling to you, take the leap and trust yourself. Embrace the process and know that every step, even the uncomfortable ones, leads to growth.

Staff Spotlight: Curling Coaches Ms. Koekkoek and Ms. Dow

Carol Rong & Marlowe Herman

Ms. Koekkoek and Ms. Dow play pivotal roles in the Havergal community as the Vice Principal of Student Life & Wellbeing and the Admission Coordinator, respectively. Beyond ensuring student wellbeing and admitting new students, they are also the coaches of this year’s new U14 Curling Team!

Growing up, both coaches participated in sports — Ms. Dow ran cross country and track, while Ms. Koekkoek played a lot of softball. Now, Ms. Koekkoek enjoys hikes in nature and Ms. Dow recently joined a spikeball league to “try something new.” Having an active background naturally led them to say “heck ya” when Ms. D asked them to consider coaching the all-new U14 Curling Team. The two coaches couldn’t wait and even bought curling socks! Ms. Koekkoek readily brought her experiences from coaching rugby and a “Learn to curl program” while Ms. Dow became an HC athletics coach for the first time.

After a great first season that included amazing bonspiels (curling tournaments), the two coaches share that they believe curling is “a fantastic sport for any level of athlete to enjoy — even those who don’t consider themselves athletic.” They truly value the sport for its  “good combination of mental strategy with physicality.” However, it was the regular weekly practices and getting to know the fabulous group of student-athletes that stood out to the coaches and made them passionate about this sport. On behalf of these coaches, a big shout out to the best U14 curlers: Yolanda, Lily, Liv, Emma, Jessie, Ruhee, Gyu Ri, Avery, Lora, Sadie and Keira! “‘Hurry hard!’ and join the sport,” the coaches remark!
