Students discover and develop their unique skills and talents in the arts through curricular and co-curricular opportunities.

The Middle School offers outstanding curricular and co-curricular programs in music, performing arts and visual arts. These provide students with the opportunity to explore their individual talents to the fullest, learn valuable life skills and gain a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Throughout the year, the entire Havergal community celebrates the accomplishments of students at exhibitions, recitals, concerts and performances, including those written and directed by students. Many student-led arts initiatives are also held throughout the school year, showcasing their talents with the wider community.

A World of Opportunities

Instruction and direction is provided by specialist teachers or practicing artists who possess a depth of knowledge and genuine desire to inspire a love of arts in others. The entire Havergal community celebrates the accomplishments of students at exhibitions, music recitals, concerts and drama and dance performances, including those written and directed by students, throughout the year.

Music

There are many ways that Middle School students can express themselves through music. Students have the opportunity to learn to sing, play an instrument and fully develop their talents. They study theory, history and music technology as they learn to create and appreciate all types of music. Participation in ensembles and student performances is encouraged. Ensembles include bands, orchestras, and choirs.

Drama

The Middle School drama program is designed to develop personal attributes, technical skills, knowledge of theatre and abilities in public speaking, presenting and performing. The focus is on activities and reflections that provide a supportive environment in which students can develop their self-concept and expressive skills. Each year, students rehearse and perform the Middle School Play for the school community.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program encourages students to experience the joy of the creative process and acquire a variety of skills.  In Grade 7, students learn the elements and principles of design for producing and responding to works of art. In Grade 8, they seek to uncover the meaning of art by examining good design and careful craftsmanship.
