Hello Gators,

The winter athletic season at Havergal College is not just about competition; it’s about fostering a sense of community and wellbeing among students. Through regular practice sessions, league games, team bonding activities and coaching support, students develop important life skills such as perseverance, resilience and leadership. More than 425 students played on 27 winter teams to achieve our athletics mission of developing confidence to remain active throughout one’s entire life.

After an exhibition season last winter and with pressure from schools like Havergal, CISAA created the first-ever Girls Squash League. The team competed in the CISAA finals on February 21, where Havergal won the A-Flight Championships. This would not have been possible without the dedication and support of our HC coaches: Mx. Curtis and Mr. Adams. Mr. Adams was instrumental in the development of the league, creating league guidelines and tournament rules for CISAA. Our Swim Team continues to dominate the water winning an impressive three CISAA Championships and qualifying more than 15 athletes for the provincial meet, OFSAA. Congratulations to all of our winter teams on their efforts this term!

It’s impossible to write about the winter term without mentioning Hockey Day. We hosted more than 800 students and 100 faculty and staff at Mattamy Arena to support the Gators. As always, the Havergal spirit was on full display. I encourage everyone to check out the @havergal_gators Instagram for some highlights. The Hockey for Health initiative was a success with numerous student-led activities aimed at “chomping the stigma” surrounding mental health, as well as fundraising over $2000 for Kids Help Phone. Our Prefects, Kaitlyn and Paige, along with the Sports Council, continue to highlight everything HC athletics and I am grateful for their passion and love for the Gators!

Finally, I’d like to mention our HC coaches: these coaches go beyond teaching the technical aspects of a sport; they serve as mentors, motivators and role models who contribute significantly to the overall development of our students. Thank you, coaches, for your time, passion and support of our athletes.

I look forward to some sunshine in the upcoming spring season!

Roll Gators!

With Intramurals, Squads, Squad Teams and Teams you can be sure that all of the girls at the Junior School are keeping active during the chilly winter months.

The gyms were buzzing with excitement at Havergal’s Junior School; for the first time, we had nine Volleyball Teams and 82 players from Grade 4 to 6. This is the highest number of participants in Volleyball at a school in the CISAA. The teams went on to bump, set and spike their way into the finals, which were hosted at Havergal on February 22.

The U12 Hockey Team represented Havergal on Hockey Day. The players proudly stepped onto the ice in front of more than 1,500 spectators. Our three Grade 1 to 3 Multisport Squads and the Badminton Squad have also been having a lot of fun. Sydney Peters, a Havergal alumni, has stepped in to coach these students and we are proud to have her back in a coaching role.

It has been wonderful to hear the sounds of joy coming from the gyms every recess. The gym is always packed with one grade at a time playing intramurals. From benchball to invasion, the students enjoy a break from the cold while they play fun games and develop their skills.

Looking ahead to the spring, we will be offering a U12 Ultimate Team, which will be the only girl’s team to compete in a co-ed league. Students can also try out for our U12 Softball Team and, of course, our 90+ Track and Field Team will be out in full force. Multisport and Basketball/Soccer Squads will also be offered for the younger grades.

Registration closes Friday, March 8, so be sure to get your child signed up for Junior School athletics!

Go Gators!

I am pleased to present the Gator Zone Winter 2023-24 edition.

In this issue, we tackle a variety of topics spotlighting thriving teams at Havergal, staff highlights, surges in sports popularity and the one-and-only Hockey Day! By now, I’m sure you were either at the game at Mattamy Arena or heard all about the exciting Havergal Varsity Hockey game against Bishop Strachan School (BSS) on February 13.

Big props to our amazing Captain Scarlett Nowakowski for showing true leadership to not only her fellow hockey teammates, but to all of our Havergal community. In the articles ahead, we aim to acknowledge the amazing staff and students who have contributed to the success of Havergal’s programs.

Ironically it is in the cold and grey days of winter when Havergal athletics truly shine. From volleyball to hockey, our intrepid writers have showcased a bevy of amazing achievements. Our Gators have been nothing short of remarkable. While the victories are important, it has been a pleasure to watch so many athletes create lifelong friendships and enduring memories.

A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated Gator Zone team, including Ms. Di Filippo, Ms. Pink, Ms. Bartlett, the Sports Prefects and our talented writers for their contributions. Your efforts bring these stories to life and capture the genuine spirit of our athletic community.

I’m thrilled to see what our Gators will accomplish in the coming spring season. With that, I hope you enjoy the second edition of the Gator Zone 2023-24!

Message from the Sports Prefects

Kaitlyn Windover and Paige Edwards

Hey Gators!

We cannot believe that the winter term is already coming to an end, with only the spring term left to go! Even with the sadness that comes with this ending, we must celebrate all of our Gator achievements and good times this winter. It truly was an awesome term!

Before the winter break, we had our second Gator Day of the year, with our U20 Volleyball Team putting on a show against Holy Trinity School. So many people came out to watch them from all grades. The ever-lasting support from our green and gold fans not only led the team to a win, but also served as a reminder of what makes Havergal Athletics so special!

As Sports Prefects, we would like to think that our amazing media skills on Instagram are what make the fans show up. But, in all honesty, we know the HC fans go to EVERY game so they can cheer on their friends from the sidelines! However, the havergal_gators Instagram is still going very strong with the continuation of Athlete of the Week and Games of the Week being posted. Huge thanks to our Sports Council (SpoCo) for this, who ensures everyone feels involved and celebrated in athletics at Havergal.

This term of course included the highly anticipated Hockey Day 2024, which was amazing. Even without bringing Hewie home, the Hockey Team definitely won the day with spirit from the HC community, leaving everyone with an incredible experience. As we expected, the Havergal Gators were overflowing with green and gold, taking over the Mattamy Arena with their crazy outfits and loud cheers. The unconditional support felt from the crowd left us players speechless, which contributes to the legacy this day leaves for women in sports. Fun fact: in the same week as Hockey Day, the Professional Women’s Hockey League broke the record for the most spectators attending a women’s hockey game at a sold-out Toronto vs. Montreal game!

This term also served as an incredible opportunity for our entire community to get involved in athletics. Most notably, through House games and benchball. For winter House games, the vigorous game of tchoukball was played, which was a huge success! Kate Leonard House took the win in the end, but every House showed up super excited to participate and cheered on their peers the whole time. During Spirit Week, the Sports Council was in charge of benchball, which is taken very seriously at HC and involves all students and staff! The staff won and made sure the message of “Staff Don’t Lose!” was made very clear to the students through cheering and signs. Way to go, staff!

Now that fall and winter are complete, it is time to look forward to the spring season! We are beyond excited to see what blooms this term and to discover all that our Gators have in store because it is never short of amazing!

Your Sports Prefects,

Paige and Kaitlyn

Nordic Ski

Charlotte Pickersgill and Aimee McCurdy Franks

This season has been a great one for Havergal’s most up-and-coming winter sport: Nordic Skiing! From many adventures in the snow to our 7.5 km race, we have developed our skills and bonded as a team.

We started off by travelling up to Collingwood for a two-day Nordic ski training camp! This tight-knit group was able to build their Nordic ski skills through lessons from experts, participate in a variety of trails and embark on a whole lot of team bonding. We were able to test our abilities by breaking off into small groups and tackling the challenging hills that faced us. Once we finally made it to the top of the hill, we were able to enjoy the glide down while trying to maintain our balance. As older students, this trip provided us with a great opportunity to work with the younger students and teach them Nordic ski skills. Finally, we ended our adventure with an entertaining bus ride back to the city, where we were able to connect over our shared love for Nordic skiing.

A couple of weeks later, we were able to participate in the OFSAA qualifying race at Lakefield College School. This race was the longest one yet, a lengthy 7.5 kilometers! Even though there were a few tumbles in the snow, we all finished together and improved so much this season. Nordic skiing was definitely a highlight of our year and we hope that the Nordic legacy carries on to the younger athletes.

Rise of Curling Popularity

Jessica Torkos

Congratulations to the Curling Team for gliding into another year of success on the curling rink! This year, we celebrate our highest curling engagement with our exhibition league having three times as many members as last year! Our exhibition players eagerly joined the D1 and D2 Curling Teams for practices on most Mondays and Wednesdays. As they rode on the bus together to the Leaside arena, they used the time to form a tight curling community, which helped to improve their curling skills.

Each Curling Team consists of four players (plus a spare): the Lead, the Second, the Vice and the Skip. The team’s objective is to slide the most rocks into the target (known as the house) to gain points while keeping the other team’s rocks out. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins! Our new curlers quickly picked up the sport, while our returning players focused on refining their skills and techniques to compete against other schools.

Due to their emphasis on skill development and practice, most exhibition curlers did not participate in formal competitive games this season. Nevertheless, the rise in curling enthusiasm may hopefully lead to the possibility of exhibition games next year!

As for our D1 and D2 athletes, both teams enjoyed a very successful season. A special shoutout to our D2 team athletes for earning their spot in the CISAA playoffs. We wish them luck as they compete over the next couple of weeks, aiming to sweep their way to victory on the ice.

New Rowing Boat

New Rowing Boat from Endowment

Isabella Janczewski

When ergs replace boats and the pool becomes a makeshift lake, rowers know that winter training has officially begun. We Gators have been working hard to maintain our fitness and skills by being flexible, disciplined and creative. After months of early morning sessions, whether in the tanks, gym or Fitness Centre, the crew is anxious to return to Hanlan Boat Club.

The upcoming 2024 spring season promises excitement, not only due to our strong crew and dedicated group of parents and coaches, but also because of the recent acquisition of a new convertible four/quad boat! This valuable addition to our fleet was made possible by the HC Rowing Endowment, established in 2017. The endowment, led by Jeff Howe and other dedicated members, was established with the goal of raising one million dollars to enhance the rowing experience at Havergal. These efforts have provided equipment procurement, repair and financial support for student-athletes, ensuring the program’s growth and success. “I’m grateful for the generosity of the current and previous parents who have contributed to the endowment. It allows our program to have top-quality equipment and explore new technologies to support our program,” says Head Coach, Michael Grieg.

As we leave the cold and dark winter behind and prepare to take on the spring season, we Gators will once again row by the motto: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Hockey Day

Lily Pettingill

From intramurals to dress-downs to cheer off, Spirit Week is everyone’s favourite time of the year. And, at the very centre of it all, is Hockey Day. On February 13, our community came together with record-breaking spirit to watch our varsity Hockey Team play against Bishop Strachan School (BSS). Led by Team Captain Scarlett Nowakowski, the Gators gave it their absolute all. Although the score ended up being 3-0 in favour of BSS, no one could come close to touching that Havergal spirit.

Hockey Day is tricky to explain to somebody who doesn’t go to Havergal—it’s more so a celebration of school spirit than it is a game. As Havergal students know, the only way to believe the true intensity of the Havercult is to see it with your own eyes, and there is no better demonstration than Hockey Day. A mob of Gators decked out completely in green and gold, many of whom will not have voices the next day, staying until every last player is off the ice. It’s an unspoken rule in everyone’s minds that blistered palms and strained throats are a small price to pay to show our team how proud we are of them.

Although I’ve always been a huge fan of the annual Havergal vs. BSS hockey game, this one in particular felt more special to me than any year before. It was my sixth and final Hockey Day. As someone who has watched this game religiously every year that I’ve been at Havergal, I can confidently say I have never seen a crowd like this one. Around 200 more people signed up for Hockey Day this year than last, which is no small feat given that last year’s game already had a crowd with more energy and enthusiasm than the average high school could ever imagine. Being part of such a powerful community is an incredible privilege and an experience that I will never forget.

To the masses of people who show up each Hockey Day and contribute to such an unbelievable atmosphere, thank you for making the HC community what it is. To our Hockey Team, you guys are just awesome. Like every year, you played your hearts out. We are so, so, proud of you. Finally, to Hewie… hold on. It’s just a matter of time until you’re home.

Carol Rong

If you’ve ever taken French at school, you may have had the privilege of having Mme. Hogan as your French teacher. But, did you know that beyond the classroom, she is highly involved in sports and plays a pivotal role in Havergal athletics? Coming from an athletic family, she was immersed in sports from a young age and always aspired to become a dancer. However, her brothers were all involved in hockey, so she grew up being the only girl on an all-boys hockey team. She also plays softball, soccer, ultimate (Frisbee), beach volleyball and golf. Currently, her favourite sport is golf, which is no surprise considering she grew up riding around in golf carts with her golf obsessed dad.

During the pandemic, she began taking golf more seriously as it was accessible. She became obsessed with the sport in a way she had never before. Now, she is constantly working on her skills and loves golfing for the fresh air and sunshine.

After coming to Havergal, Mme Hogan was introduced to even more sports. Playing beach volleyball inspired her to start coaching the U16 D2 Volleyball Team with Coach Lia, where she discovered that indoor volleyball is a completely different sport from beach volleyball. Despite the differences, she thoroughly enjoys coaching and has also coached the U13 Basketball Teams to a third and fourth overall finish in CISAA!

When asked what advice she would give to students, she said, “Always put yourself out there and try something new, even if you might be mediocre because at Havergal it’s cool to try.”

February 2024

Inside Havergal

Message from the Principal

Dr. Katrina Samson

February is often associated with the “blahs”—a time of year in Canada when the dark skies and cold weather leave people feeling a little down, looking longingly towards the springtime. At Havergal, however, we combat those February blahs with a healthy dose of green and gold spirit! From our youngest Gators to our Grads, Spirit Week at Havergal is met with great enthusiasm. New students, faculty, staff and parents get to experience first-hand one of the distinguishing Havergal qualities—our unmatched school spirit. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly Hockey Day, where this year more than 800 students and huge numbers of faculty, staff, parents and Old Girls/Alums joined to cheer on our Gators as we took on Bishop Strachan School in this annual tradition celebrating girls in sport and school spirit.

This year, thanks to some parents and the perseverance of our Upper School Athletic Director, we had three players from Toronto’s PWHL team—Jess Jones, Jessica Kondas and Emma Keenan—join us for the ceremonial puck drop. In speaking with the players before the game, they were blown away by the excitement (and volume) of the crowd. For me, having them join us during their inaugural season highlighted the difference we are making at Havergal—that is, showcasing the strength and passion of women and girls who are making a positive difference in the world. If anyone ever questioned the interest in women’s sports, all they had to do was experience the excitement in the Mattamy Centre—from the hundreds of signs made to support athletes on the ice, to the creative chants designed to cheer on our Gators —the power of women and girls was on full display. For girls, their moment to be at centre ice, centre court and centre stage has most definitely arrived!

Despite the healthy competition throughout the week, the true meaning of Spirit Week is a celebration of community and togetherness. The pride in our school, the connection between students who know what it means to work hard and play hard, to support one another in excelling, to strive for excellence, these are the sentiments that bond our girls together, shape our community and make Havergal like no other place on earth. Thank you for all of your support this month.

The end of February also marks the time we welcome new members to the Havergal community. Our Admissions team has been working non-stop to meet prospective families and share what makes Havergal so special. Thank you to the countless volunteers who helped with school tours and shared positive experiences about HC with prospective families. We’re excited to welcome an incredible group of students to Havergal and see how they will contribute to the Havergal spirit!

Message from the Board of Governors

Diane Jeffreys, Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee

The Board of Governors’ Financial Sustainability Committee has the primary mandate to safeguard the long-term financial sustainability of Havergal College. As Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee, I have the pleasure of working in partnership with an engaged group of volunteers, as well as Havergal’s Chief Operations Officer, Laura Sims, and the Executive Director of Finance, Johann McCormack.

Our committee members include current and past parents and leaders in the community. We look to involve a mix of individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and financial experience. This provides the opportunity to bring a diverse perspective to discussions and broad insights in support of the financial decisions the school makes.

The Financial Sustainability Committee is working with the Planning & Priorities Taskforce and Havergal’s Senior Leadership Team to ensure the financial plans are in place to support the long-term strategic direction of the school.

Working with the school’s Chief Operations Officer and the Executive Director of Finance, we continue to focus on overseeing and monitoring Havergal’s financial plan, both short and long-term. This involves balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders, including students, parents, staff and faculty, and—like all good financial plans—is a balancing act requiring careful consideration of a series of trade-offs. The topics that we regularly discuss include:

  • Capital spending that invests in the campus to maintain and enhance our facilities in support of our strategy and programs.
  • Short and long-term financial plans and the funding required to support the wide variety of programs that are fundamental to the student experience at Havergal.

As the Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee, I am happy to report that Havergal continues to be financially strong, benefiting from a disciplined, responsible and thoughtful approach to fiscal responsibility.

US and JS Athletic Recap Winter 2024

Anna Bartlett, Junior School Athletic Director, and Carla Di Filippo, Upper School Athletic Director

As Athletic Directors, we are constantly impressed by the level of participation of our students. We are a school of “do-ers” and this is highlighted in the Athletics program.

This winter, we were thrilled to host 26 sports teams in the Upper School, with 426 participating athletes, and 15 teams in the Junior School, with 155 students competing in one (and sometimes two) of these teams! There is nothing that brings us more joy than seeing the increasing demand for sporting opportunities for women and girls.

Here are some athletic highlights for the year so far:

  • Our Upper School D2 Hockey Team placed second in the CISAA regular season, even though it was only in its second year of existence. The team competed in a 3v3 tournament hosted by St. Anne’s School.
  • We’ve also seen a huge surge of interest in rugby at HC, with more than 30 students registered for winter rugby training.
  • We’re proud that our school is leading the way for girl’s squash. After applying pressure on the CISAA to make squash an official league for girls, Havergal is making this happen by providing support for the sport through the convenership of the league. Havergal just won the first ever CISAA “A” Flight championships!
  • At the Junior School, there are a record-breaking nine Volleyball Teams for students in Grades 4 to 6, with more than 82 students participating in the sport. Here’s a photo of all of our JS volleyball players this year:

Being a part of a team has so many benefits and seeing high participation rates makes us proud as educators. We know that students who are involved in athletics gain confidence from not only the skills they learn during a season, but also from the support and encouragement they gain from having a strong social network made up of coaches and teammates. Students who develop healthy, active lifestyles when they are young benefit from these skills throughout their lives.

Havergal's D1 Hockey Team at Hockey Day.

Havergal Loves Hockey Day!

At Havergal, Hockey Day is more than just a hockey game. It’s a day where students, teachers, staff, Old Girls/Alums, families and friends come together, dressed head-to-toe in green and gold (quite literally) to show our support, gratitude and love for everything HC. There is no force greater than the HC spirit. The vibrant energy, unity and sense of belonging is present each and every day at our school, but Hockey Day is when we get to show the world how we live these attributes and what it truly means to be a Gator!

At its core, school spirit is more than just cheering for sports teams or participating in pep rallies; it’s about cultivating a deep connection to one’s school and embracing its values, traditions and community. This year we hosted more than 800 Havergal students from Grades 4 to 12 at Mattamy Athletic Centre, where we cheered on the Gators.

Even though we lost the game, we still won the day. We could not be more proud of how our team represented our school and played their hearts out, supporting one another from start to finish. For the fans, it was a treat to watch the athleticism of one of the most beautiful sports in the world. At a time when women’s sports are breaking records in viewership and ticket sales, Hockey Day also demonstrates, once again, that women belong in sport. Thank you, HC, for demonstrating class, inclusiveness and spirit on Hockey Day.

It’s definitely a Gator thing!

Spirit Week Message from the Clubs and Spirit Prefect

Nicole G.

As I look back on my 14 years at Havergal, it’s hard to believe that they’ll soon be coming to an end. From my first day in Junior Kindergarten until now, my fondest memories have always been centred on the spirit that defines our school.

One particular event that stands out is Spirit Week. I may be biased as Clubs and Spirit Prefect, but it really is the best week of the year and it’s incredible to see everyone in the community embrace the fun by dressing up in their craziest outfits. The sight of students dressed in their head-to-toe colourful outfits, all coming together to cheer as loudly as they can, always amazes me. There is a sense of unity that flows through these ivy walls; whether it’s because of the energetic cheer-offs or the collective enthusiasm during assemblies, there’s a fantastic sense of togetherness that’s truly inspiring.

This past year, I decided to run for the Clubs and Spirit Prefect role for the 2023-24 school year because of my passion for fostering unity and excitement within our community. Events like Spirit Week have a significant impact on us students by providing a real sense of belonging and helping us create lasting memories.

I will never forget my first Spirit Week Assembly: I was four years old when all the Prefects came to the Junior School and taught us the school cheer for that year. Ever since then, I knew that spirit at Havergal is more than just a tradition; it’s a fundamental part of what makes us Gators; it’s what makes this community so strong and our school experience truly special.

As I prepare to move on to the next chapter of my life, I’ll always cherish the memories of cheering in a crowd of green and gold or shedding tears during my last hockey day. Go Gators!

The Power of Havergal’s Green & Gold

Krista Koekkoek, Vice Principal of Student Life and Wellbeing

I have just come up for air after my first Spirit Week at Havergal College. It was a whirlwind of dressing up, cheering on and participating in the fun inter-school competitions that can help remind us of what really matters in our schools. No, it’s not necessarily having the most Party City accessories to match your grade’s dress-up colour or winning the infamous Hewitt Cup game versus Bishop Strachan School, although those are great highlights. As someone tasked with thinking about wellbeing for our students and its intentional development in our school, for me, Spirit Week brings to life the true power of community and the potential of its collective impact.

Let me explain.

We all yearn to belong. It’s no surprise that this feeling of genuinely being a part of a community is considered essential to us feeling well. When we are valued for our strengths, we feel seen. When these strengths intertwine with those of others, an unstoppable synergy emerges. True wellbeing is cultivated through both appreciating individual contributions and embracing the power of the collective. A definition of true belonging that struck a chord with me, which I’m quoting from author and inspirational speaker Brené Brown, is the ability to “share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone.”

So, what did I see this month? How were Havergal students both standing confidently alone and united as one?

  • Our annual Upper School Grade Cheer Off: We saw students emerging as leaders in rallying their peers, creating lyrics and choreographing set pieces. Then, standing together as a grade in front of their school, singing louder and prouder than I have ever witnessed.
  • Hockey Day: There were leaders on the ice and in the crowd—and everyone had their own sense of style—but all of it was green and gold. Our cheers were uplifting, in praise of peers and regardless of the score; the school emerged as victorious.
  • What about our Junior School House meetings? The Grade 6 students planned and executed the House meetings—a leadership moment they won’t soon forget. And do you know who was in the crowd? The Upper School House leaders who came to cheer them on and be a part of the meeting; a testament to the interconnected nature of our community.

In essence, wellbeing is realized when individuals embrace their authentic selves, finding confidence in both collective endeavours and solitary pursuits. This vibrant spirit is alive and thriving at Havergal, nurturing young women who are poised to make a difference. Go Gators!

Carla Di Filippo

Upper School Athletic Director

Ms. Di Filippo (also known as Ms. D.) has the privilege of providing opportunities for girls to play sports in the hopes they discover a passion for physical activity, which for her is one of the most rewarding careers in the world.

Sports have been an integral part of her journey since childhood, when she was a competitive swimmer, specializing in the 400m IM, 200m Breaststroke and 800m Freestyle. During her undergraduate years at McMaster University, her dedication to swimming led to numerous achievements, including winning three Ontario University Athletics championships, receiving co-MVP recognition in 2001 and earning Academic All-Canadian status in 2000 and 2001. Following the conclusion of her swimming career, Ms. D. discovered Ultimate (Frisbee) and instantly fell in love with the sport. The spirit of the game, coupled with the athleticism it demanded, captivated her instantly.

After learning that Ultimate hosts a World Championships and is a part of the World Games, Ms. D. dedicated much of her free time to trying to make the national team. In 2012, one year after having her first child, she was named to the Senior National Team, where they finished third at the World Championship in Japan! This experience sparked a realization: there was a shortage of women coaches in the sports realm, a gap that Ms. D. felt compelled to fill. Thus began her transition from player to coach.

Over the years, Ms. D. has had the privilege of coaching elite athletes from across Toronto and Canada, both on club teams and national teams. Among her proudest moments are clinching the World Championships in 2016 (triumphing over the USA) and co-coaching the World Games team in 2022 in Alabama. To be recognized three times as Coach of the Year by Ultimate Canada has also been a tremendous honour for her.

Ms. D. is currently coaching the Women’s Senior National Team, who are competing at the World Championships in the Gold Coast, Australia, in late August 2024. She is greatly looking forward to this national team cycle and competing on the world stage one more time this summer!

As Ms. D. continues to navigate her coaching journey, she remains steadfast in her commitment to empowering young athletes, instilling in them the values of teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship. Her experiences, both as a competitor and a coach, have reinforced her belief in the transformative power of sports and the profound sense of fulfillment that comes from nurturing the next generation of athletes.

She is grateful every day for the opportunities Havergal College provides for students and the school’s belief that girls and women deserve the same sporting opportunities as men. Every day she gets to live out her dream in a place that shares the same passion, demand for opportunity and, most importantly, spirit of sport.

Maggie Houston-White, Executive Director of Strategic Enrolment Management, and Emily Simms-Brown, Director of Admission

As we gear up for Havergal’s beloved Spirit Week, the halls are buzzing with students coming together as a whole grade, planning their cheers, how they will show their grade spirit and represent their grades at all the activities the student leaders have planned. Of course, the excitement for Hockey Day is also in the air and we are so proud to be supporting Hockey 4 Health, which you can read about in this issue of Havergal Highlights

We are also aware of the excitement that is building for families as Offer Day draws near. All families will be hearing from Havergal on Friday, February 23 and acceptances are due back on Wednesday, February 28. We appreciate all of the time and effort all of our applicant families have put into this process. The caliber of candidates and their families have been outstanding. We know the future is a bright one.

Sincerely,

Maggie & Emily

Message from the Admissions Prefects

Andi and Meena

Despite Havergal’s expansive 22-acre campus and a student population exceeding 1000, the essence of our community is surprisingly intimate. Serving as your Admissions Prefects for the 2023-24 school year, our primary mission has been to highlight the tightly woven fabric of our student body and the countless opportunities available within our school.

In our role, we’ve forged connections with diverse individuals, passionately showcasing our deep affection for Havergal—the very motivation that drove both of us to become Admissions Prefects. We are constantly sharing information about the admissions process and our experiences at HC, while simultaneously learning new information about the opportunities within the school that we have not participated in, enriching our perspectives. As we reflect on our Havergal journeys, we find fulfillment in guiding younger students as they chart their own paths.

What resonates most with us in our role as Admissions Prefects is the opportunity to engage with hundreds of families, expressing our profound appreciation for the enriching experiences Havergal has bestowed upon us. During tours, we eagerly answer questions and offer guidance to prospective students. Our involvement in events provides a backstage view of the meticulous process—from tours and testing, to interviews and thoughtful decisions. Overseeing an Ambassador Program comprising over 100 enthusiastic student volunteers in Grades 11 and 12, we’ve taught them the art of giving compelling tours by engaging with applicants in authentic ways.

Drawing from our experiences as once newcomers to Havergal, we share three invaluable pieces of advice with new and incoming students:

  1. First and foremost, embrace authenticity. There’s no need to conform to any predefined mold at Havergal; by staying true to yourself, you attract those who appreciate the genuine you.
  2. Secondly, venture into new opportunities. Stepping outside your comfort zone not only facilitates new friendships, but also unveils passions and opportunities within Havergal.
  3. Lastly, foster connections with your peers. Despite how scary it can be to begin, everyone is in somewhat of a similar boat. Talking to the people at your table group, or even smiling at someone in the halls, are great ways to begin creating that sense of belonging that will last a lifetime.

Message from the Vice Principal of Experiential Education and Innovation

Garth Nichols

As the Vice Principal of Experiential Education and Innovation, I have a background of living abroad and travelling internationally, as well as starting my own entrepreneurial initiatives and exploring emerging technologies. I have always had a passion for experiential learning. Throughout my eight years at Havergal, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of experiential learning and global experiences in our students’ lives. I’ve observed student growth, resilience and newfound perspectives firsthand while accompanying our students on trips abroad, which is truly remarkable. These opportunities not only expand their horizons, but also redefine when and where learning occurs, how it takes place and the depth and personal significance of that learning.

Experiential learning has become an integral part of our academic program, permeating various disciplines from Science to Languages, and it’s a key part of our Global Learning and Leading Diploma program. Our dedicated staff in the Forum for Change—which functions as the global heartbeat of the school—engage with our students both inside and outside the classroom at the local, regional and international levels to create experiences that leave lasting impressions.

One of the highlights that intersects experiential learning and innovations in learning is our HC-X TC-9 course—which stands for “Transdisciplinary Course for Grade 9s” or “The Challenge for Grade 9s.” This course develops students’ skills in transdisciplinary thinking and learning by building knowledge and examining current and predictive events through hands-on experiences. In March of 2024, we will launch the second year of this immersive course designed for Grade 9 students. This program not only equips them with a deeper understanding of global issues and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but also empowers them to take local actions that make a real difference.

Moving from local impact to global, Havergal’s Forum for Change has just concluded an exhilarating year in our Global Experience programming. From Ottawa to Bhutan in 2022–23, to Kananaskis and Nairobi in 2023–24, our students have explored the world, broadening their horizons and embracing diverse cultures.

At Havergal, we follow the well-researched Kolb Cycle, guiding our students through a transformative process. We start by helping them develop their global competencies, preparing them for the experiences that lie ahead. During their travels, they put these skills into action, gaining insights that go far beyond traditional classroom learning.

Upon their return, we engage in what we call a transference session, where students and faculty reflect on their experiences. This is a pivotal moment where they craft the narratives that will shape their self-identities and the stories they share with others. Storytelling, as we believe, is a powerful means of integrating their newfound knowledge into their personal and collective consciousness.

Our halls and classrooms are now filled with stories of adventure, connection, service and cultural immersion, alongside discussions of generative AI, robotics, food and world religions. These global experiences not only enrich our community, but also deepen our collective understanding of Havergal as a global entity.

Experiential learning, at its core, enriches our community by helping us understand who we are as learners. It sparks a passion for exploration, nurtures empathy and instils a sense of responsibility to make a positive impact in the world.

As we look forward to more adventures, connections and learning opportunities, let us continue to embrace experiential learning and global experiences as integral parts of the Havergal experience. Together, we will shape the future of our students and empower them to become compassionate, globally aware leaders.

Here’s to the adventures that await us and the stories yet to be told.

Message from the Board of Governors

Jill Fraser, Chair of the Board

New Year’s greetings from the Board of Governors. We extend our warmest wishes for a happy and healthy 2024.

As the winter term begins, we should pause to reflect on the eventful school year to date. We commenced the year with the return of more co-curricular and athletic events, and joined together as a community for another successful Celebration Saturday and Reunion Weekend. Thrive Week returned to promote mental health awareness, and highlighted some of the strategies and skills that students can use to improve their wellbeing. The Upper School had 27 exciting sports options available to them this fall, with a record 407 students participating. We hosted our first Gator Games of the year in October, with our teams supported by fans proudly wearing green and gold! We arranged a hugely successful Music Retreat to Campfire Circle and a Drama Retreat to Mono Cliffs Outdoor Education Centre. Our Health and Physical Education department reinstated the open gym program at lunchtime with high participation—students were excited to get exercise as well as meet like-minded people. The year closed with a series of Christmas concerts. The traditional Upper School Carol Service held at St. Paul’s Bloor Street church was a delightful evening of carols and lessons. The Junior School Christmas Concert was a beautiful event also held at St. Paul’s, and the JK/SK Christmas Concert was held in the Junior School. What a wonderful way to move into the holiday season!

As we look ahead to planning for the next school year, we would like to remind parents/guardians that the opportunity to apply to serve on the Board of Governors or a Board Committee is currently open. The Board of Governors Application Form is located here and I encourage you to become involved. This year the Board is especially interested in identifying potential candidates with one or more of the following: philanthropic board and/or charitable foundation board experience; capital infrastructure project oversight experience; and CPA/CFO/operational finance/public accountancy experience. The application due date is Friday, February 2, 2024. Applications will be reviewed in February/March with interviews taking place in March for those selected. Additional details on the role and responsibilities of Board and Committee members can be found here. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

We have accomplished great things so far this school year and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve throughout the rest of the year. I’m delighted to see our school values of Integrity, Inquiry, Compassion and Courage at work in the school and our community. Thank you all for your efforts and support as we navigate the remainder of the year together.

Thank you,

Jill

Round Square: Opportunities Abound!

In November, five Havergal student Delegates, Havergal’s Principal Dr. Samson and Vice Principal of Experiential Learning and Innovation Garth Nichols travelled to the Round Square International Conference to join over 1200 other students from around the world at the Brookhouse Schools, Nairobi, Kenya. They began with a pre-conference excursion to the Masai Mara, where for four days, they lived and learned about Masai social, economic, environmental and cultural practices at the Masai Educational Research Centre. Then they travelled into the heart of Nairobi to take part in the conference.

This year, the conference focussed on Internationalism, Democracy and Adventure. Participants learned from senior government officials, activists, fashion designers, journalists and more about “The New Africa”—the theme of the conference. Students were billeted and were able to make long-lasting connections with students from Nairobi and from all over the world.

Havergal’s membership as a Global Member with Round Square avails us of these opportunities, and they will continue to grow. In May of 2024, there is an opportunity for Middle School students to participate in the Round Square Regional Conference in Kananaskis, Alberta. More information about this excursion can be found here (applications close Friday, February 2).

In September of 2024, Senior School students can apply to join the Round Square International Conference in Bogota, Colombia. Applications are now open and selection will be completed before the March Break. More information can be found here (applications close Friday, February 2).

Hey Havergal! We are beyond excited for Hockey Day and to announce that Havergal’s Hockey 4 Health initiative is continuing this year! The core of sports is community, the exact thing that makes Hockey Day so special. Along with the thrilling game on the ice, Hockey Day has the unique power to bring us together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared spirit. Highlighting this feeling emphasizes the idea that none of us are alone and how strength truly lies in this community, no matter what day it is. Unity is forged through cheering for a common cause and in the shared moments of triumph; these experiences build bonds that extend far beyond the rink.

Hockey 4 Health is a powerful platform for our Havergal community to come together and address the stigma surrounding mental health. In support of this initiative, Havergal and The Bishop Strachan School are working together to raise funds for Kids Help Phone. This is just one of the ways we can work toward ending the stigma around getting mental health support. By leveraging the strength of our shared experiences and love for our community, we aim to break down barriers, encourage open conversations and create a supportive environment for all.

HC-X Digital Microcredentials

In fall 2022, HC-X launched a new initiative for students in Grades 9 to 12 who may be curious about a potential future career to explore bite-sized learning in emerging fields relevant to their interests and futures.

Over the 12 to 16 hours of a program, students are empowered to explore their interests in topics such as Pre-Medical Studies, Artificial Intelligence, Design Thinking & Entrepreneurship and Contemporary Finance and immerse themselves in the knowledge, content and practice within these fields.

Students work and learn alongside industry leaders and experts from organizations such as The Academies by Harvard Student Agencies and InspiritAI, Stanford and MIT alumni. The Contemporary Finance program also features connections with Havergal alum and current parents on the topics of Women in Capital Markets, ESG investing and Cryptocurrencies.

Upon completion of a Digital Microcredential course, students are issued a digital wallet and a blockchain-based microcredential certificate to recognize their achievement.

Although they are non-credit courses, participating in these digital microcredential opportunities empower students with focused, flexible and recognized learning experiences, enhancing their employability and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.

Blended Learning—What Is It?

Have you heard of “blended learning” but you aren’t really sure what it means or how it affects the students at Havergal College? Read on to learn more!

Blended Learning is an overall course design that includes a mix of face-to-face and online activities, engagements and interactions. This includes popular strategies such as a station rotation, playlist or flipped lesson.

Take a minute to reflect on the following statements and how they could better support learning:

  • Imagine being able to speed up, pause or rewind your teacher when taking notes during instruction.
  • Imagine receiving instant feedback on your set of practice questions.
  • Imagine receiving more time and attention one-on-one with your teacher to focus on a challenging area.
  • Imagine the confidence that comes from shaping your identity as a learner and when choices in the pace, path, place and time of your learning are up to you.

Over the past four years, Havergal has increasingly used Blended Learning approaches to promote student agency in their learning, equipping them with self-directed learning skills for their future.

Havergal faculty have participated in professional learning experiences on Blended Learning. The HC-X led a team of 15 Blended Learning Leads and Coaches from across the Junior and Upper Schools to investigate opportunities to deepen these practices.

Working with author and Christensen Institute researcher Heather Clayton Staker, HC-X is hosting a Blended Learning Conference in May 2024 to continue this pedagogical learning journey with other educators across CIS Ontario schools.

Our Blended Learning Leads and Coaches have been developing their skill sets in this area and will continue to help classroom teachers enhance the learning experience for all students.

Getting Started with Cybersecurity

Sam Chan, Chief Information Officer

Technology is everywhere these days. Every day we hear about new developments, features and upgrades. We also hear about large companies and individuals having their accounts hacked and the unfortunate impacts that occur as a result. All of this change and impact can feel pretty overwhelming when we think about having to protect ourselves from these cyber threats.

Cybersecurity can be a challenging topic—everyone agrees it’s important, but with so much information available, sometimes it’s hard to find a place to start or find information that is free of technical jargon. Keep reading for a three-point plan to help get you and your family on your way to improving your cybersecurity.

1. Educate Yourself

The hardest place to be is: “I don’t know what I don’t know, and I don’t know what questions to ask.” For those of you in that predicament, Consumer Reports’ Security Planner is a great place to start. Simply answer three questions to produce an action plan that you can download. You can do all of this without registering.

Phishing is still one of the most prevalent issues out there. Take this quiz to see if you can spot the phishing attempts!

2. Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Passphrases Where Possible

We want to use the best means possible to protect access to our online accounts that contain financial and health information, or smart devices that help manage our home.

You should use multi-factor authentication (MFA) where possible as this means that a hacker will need to have more than your username and password to access your account. If MFA isn’t available, then you’ll want passwords that are easy to remember but difficult to guess (this comic explains it well). I’m a big proponent of using passphrases where possible.

Bonus tip—don’t use the same passphrase across all your accounts. I have separate passphrases for each of my online banking accounts.

3. Keep Devices Up-to-Date and Back Up Your Data

Keep your devices up-to-date so that you receive the latest security updates to help protect your device from a constant and ever growing number of threats. This includes deleting apps and data that you no longer use, or safely disposing of devices that you no longer use.

It’s also a good idea to take regular backups of your data just in case something goes wrong with an update or you do get hacked—at least you’ll have a copy of your data to fall back on.

I hope this helps give you a solid start to creating a cybersecurity strategy for protecting you and your family.

Meet Our Faculty & Staff

Mr. Adams, HC-X Teacher

Jeff Adams

HC-X Teacher

Mr. Adams has been at Havergal for almost 10 years and has taught students in Science and Math and has led a variety of HC-X programs. He is actively involved as one of our Middle School Form leaders, athletics coach and mentor for the Global Learning and Leading Diploma (GLLD) program. With undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Science, he is currently completing a PhD in curriculum, teaching and learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. He is a coach for Cohort 21, a community of passionate Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) Ontario educators who are interested in refining and redesigning their practice through the exploration of new pedagogies, ideas and tools.

Since becoming an HC-X Teacher at Havergal, Mr. Adams is very excited to be co-developing with Mr. Nichols our Grade 9 course called TC-9, which stands for “Transdisciplinary Course for Grade 9s” as well as “The Challenge for Grade 9s.” It is a course that requires students to use the skills, knowledge and approaches from several different academic courses simultaneously to address their chosen topics. Through TC-9, students are learning about and engaging with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. HC-X teachers like Mr. Adams work closely with Grade 9 educators to interweave key skills, learnings and activities from other required curricula within the TC-9 course.

This year, Mr. Adams has been focussing on incorporating inquiry-based learning, experiential education and project-based learning into the classroom, which he lives and breathes outside of Havergal as he pursues his PhD in Transdisciplinary Studies. His curiosity for continuous learning is an inspiration and an asset to his students and the school community.

Inside Havergal

Message from the Executive Director of Advancement

Annette Paul

At Havergal, giving back is in our DNA. From the time that students arrive on their first day, in conjunction with their studies, they are shown different ways they can help others. Whether it’s designing tools in Grade 6 science that help create a more accessible world; selecting accessibility initiatives as their area of designation for their graduating year fund; running food drives; supporting agencies working to combat food insecurity; leading parent volunteer fundraising events; or hosting Celebration Saturday annually for the benefit of community partners, Havergal’s broader community – students, parents, Old Girls/Alums, employees – place great value on the role they play as champions in support of others.

Philanthropy is a key pillar of Havergal’s everyday life, which is evident through our culture and priorities. For decades, parents, Old Girls/Alums, employees, grandparents and other friends of Havergal have made generous philanthropic contributions in support of enhancements and expansions in areas such as student financial support, athletics, the arts, facilities and academic program. While the tuition contributions that families make support the work needed to educate students, there are key enhancements necessary to both keep pace and stay ahead of learning and skill-building that will keep Havergal students prepared and purposeful. These enhancements include recent renovations to the science facilities in the Upper School as well as program-enhancing contributions to the STEM Lab in the Junior School. It also includes support for the Wellbeing Program, which enables Havergal to host world-renowned experts as guest speakers. Donations to student financial support have long been a priority to families, Old Girls/Alums and employees. Removing financial barriers to talented students is enabled by the belief that a Havergal education is unique. Philanthropic contributions pave the current path and road ahead for girls in their education, leadership and empowerment.

We couldn’t do it without you.

In the coming weeks, enhancing athletics, outdoor education and play facilities will be a focus of Havergal’s philanthropic efforts. Financial support helps expand and enhance the learning opportunities in these areas, providing the space for students and the broader community to learn and grow. On the field, in the water, at the gym and on the playground, Havergal students learn crucial lessons: courage, tenacity, goal-setting, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence. In addition to providing extensive health and wellness benefits, sport and outdoor play foster values that equip girls for long-term personal and professional success now and into the future. We look forward to sharing more about these opportunities for support in the coming months.

Applications for the Havergal College Board of Governors

Michael Copeland, Chair of the Governance Committee

I have the pleasure of writing to the Havergal community on behalf of the Governance Committee of the Board of Governors as this is our formal call for applications to serve on the Board or on a Board Committee.

The primary responsibility of the Governance Committee is to ensure that the Board is well-equipped to carry out its oversight role with respect to the College. Part of that responsibility is to continually evaluate how well the Board and its committees carry out their mandates and advance the College’s educational mission.

One of the most important things the Governance Committee works on is identifying and nominating strong candidates for the Board and its committees. This is an ongoing effort as we try to maintain a roster of broadly qualified candidates. Using a competency-based model, the committee identifies skills and constituencies that need to be considered as we plan for the future.

In reviewing applications, the Governance Committee looks to constitute a Board that balances a mix of competencies and experience, established and newer Old Girls/Alums, current and past parents, and independent members. The Board is also committed to ensuring there is diverse representation on the Board of Governors whose skills and experience align with our competency framework.

In assessing applications, the Governance Committee favours no particular professional background over another, but we frequently seek specific areas of experience and expertise. This year the committee is especially interested in identifying potential candidates with one or more of the following: philanthropic board and/or charitable foundation board experience; capital infrastructure project oversight experience; and CPA/CFO/operational finance/public accountancy experience.

Governors are volunteers and must be willing to commit the substantial time, effort and energy necessary to fulfill the role and serve the school. It is also expected that a Board Governor will make Havergal one of their top personal charitable priorities.

If you are interested in being considered for the Board or a committee, please let us know by completing the Board of Governors Application Form by Friday, February 2, 2024. Additional details on the role and responsibilities of Board and committee members can be found here.

At Havergal, our commitment to creating positive change was evident during this year’s Celebration Saturday. This special day brought together generations of HC community members and underscored our dedication to the school’s mission, vision and values. It was wonderful to gather together to support a common goal: supporting our Community Partners.

We are pleased to share that our collective efforts resulted in a significant achievement—a fundraising total of $55,000! This generous contribution will directly support our partners.

Through collaboration with organizations like Grenoble, Arts City and New Circles, we are able to provide both financial support and genuine co-learning experiences. Our approach centres on the four Ps—People, Place, Perspective and Partnership. Connecting students with our Community Partners fosters authentic relationships and emphasizes the value of reciprocal learning.

Thank you to everyone who supported this important event at Havergal. We are already looking forward to Celebration Saturday 2024!

Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a day to inspire generosity, with a common mission to create a world where giving back is part of everyday life. The movement started in 2013 and has been gaining momentum ever since. This year, Giving Tuesday was on Tuesday, November 28, which we promoted across Havergal’s social media channels.

We’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our community for your support on Giving Tuesday! Through your generous contributions to our financial support program, we can continue to move forward with our 129 year old mission of preparing young women to make a difference and be leaders and good citizens. If you haven’t already participated, we hope that you will join us as we strive to make a Havergal education inclusive and accessible for more students. Gifts of any amount are appreciated at: http://bit.ly/HavergalDonate

Alisha Coroa, Manager of Annual and Leadership Giving

Thank you to the Class of 2023 for raising an incredible $137,000 toward mental health support and wellbeing at Havergal! This year, the Class of 2024 has decided to support accessibility initiatives as a part of their Grad Gift.

This year’s Grads believe in providing support to those who might need additional assistance while making their way in the world. Some of the areas that could be supported by this fund include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Improved accessibility such as door operators and/or interior ramps, as well as wayfinding signage.
  • Support for accessibility programs that aid in learning and meeting students where they are.

The Class of 2024 is well on its way to achieving their goal and has raised over $33,000 thus far. This group of Grads would appreciate you supporting their endeavour by using this link to make a contribution to their Havergal legacy.

Do You Ever Wonder What Donor Stewardship Really Means?

Stewardship is about fostering relationships with the donor community following an initial donation. Not only does the stewardship process include gratitude and recognition of donors, it also involves demonstrating the impact of a donor’s philanthropic support. Stewardship activities—such as developing annual reports and personalized stewardship reports—ensure donors are informed about how their contributions are managed and how their gifts positively elevate the organization’s mission. Through stewardship, donors receive regular communications and expressions of gratitude, all of which help to convey the importance of philanthropy and encourage future giving.

Here are some facts about giving in Canada1:

  • You can claim 15% of the first $200 you donate as a charitable tax credit and 29% on any amount over that limit.
  • You can transfer your charitable tax credit to your spouse.
  • There are federal and provincial charitable tax credits.
  • When you donate a gift of securities, the government will eliminate the taxable capital gain and you receive a tax receipt for the full market value of the security in the amount of the closing trading price on the day Havergal receives the security.
  • Donating a gift of securities makes appreciated stock one of the most cost effective ways to donate to the Havergal College Foundation.

Thank you for Supporting Ivy Market!

Havergal College Parents Association

On November 21, the HCPA kicked off the holiday season with our second annual Ivy Market. In addition to the bake sales and HCPA Marketplace, Ivy Market offered our HC community a chance to shop with local vendors, stock up on spiritwear and of course, socialize at the cocktail party.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Ivy Market a success. Whether you fired up your oven for the bake sale, volunteered your time to help out at the event, dropped by during the day to shop or came to the fabulous evening cocktail party, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Specifically, we would like to thank: Liz Phipps, Sherry Zhao, Arti Patel and Julia Skliarenko, who co-chaired the bake sales; Tim Costigan and Jaswinder Salh who oversaw the cocktail party; Martha Fell who organized an impressive selection of vendors; Lisa Windover and Mahnaz Hamidzadeh who co-chaired the HCPA Marketplace; and Cory Ellison who led event communications. An extra special thanks goes to Lisa Windover, Sarah D’Souza and Alex Hodgson for their hard work and creativity in spearheading the whole event. We also couldn’t have done this without the tireless support of HC’s Manager of Parent Relations Christine Spence and Admin Assistant Alex Hine

All funds raised by Ivy Market will be put toward the HCPA’s fundraising goals. Click here to view photos from the event.

Staying Connected With Our Old Girls/Alums

Kate Crokam, Director, Alumni Engagement

Fall alumni engagement initiatives included the inaugural Havergal Connections Presents: Joanna Griffiths ’01 and the Knix Entrepreneurial Journey event. With nearly 150 attendees, this gathering marked a significant milestone, kickstarting the Havergal Connections Presents series. Joanna Griffiths’ insightful discussion not only captivated the audience, but also set the tone for future events, emphasizing our commitment to providing enriching experiences for Old Girls/Alums. Joanna also spoke to riveted students during Prayers earlier in the day.

Similarly, Reunion 2023 proved to be a success, enticing over 400 Old Girls/Alums to return to campus for an unforgettable homecoming celebration. This year, we introduced several new and engaging events as part of the reunion festivities, such as a Former Boarders Dinner, creating an even more vibrant and inclusive experience for the alum community.

Our commitment to fostering connections extends beyond flagship, GTA events. We are also excited to highlight the success of two young alum socials hosted in Kingston and London, specifically tailored for our most recent graduates studying at Queen’s and Western Universities. These events offered a chance for young alumni to engage in networking, exchange experiences and re-establish connections with the Havergal community, highlighting our commitment to fostering a supportive network for Old Girls/Alums beyond their time at Havergal.

Reflecting on the achievements of Celebration Saturday and our fall alumni activities, we encourage you to explore the captivating stories featured in the digital magazine, Chronicle. This publication captures the core of Havergal Community’s accomplishments, offering a glimpse into the significant moments and connections that mold the shared journey. Read Chronicle magazine to stay connected and to delve into the evolving positive transformations at Havergal.

Amidst the continuation of these initiatives, we express our heartfelt thanks to the Havergal community for your unwavering support, acknowledging that your dedication is crucial to the success of our endeavors.
