The Position

This role supports the science department faculty by preparing labs, maintaining inventory of equipment and materials, preparing course materials, and assisting in the classroom. The successful candidate will also support students by providing supervision, instruction and assistance inside and outside of regular class, as needed. In addition, the role will entail the maintenance of chemical inventory records, a focus on laboratory safety, the transport of dangerous goods and other types of waste. Regular professional development will be provided to meet changing program and equipment requirements.

Specific Accountabilities

Laboratory Safety and Supplies:
  • Research, prepare and set-up all labs as per outlines submitted by science faculty.
  • Ensure MSDS sheets are up-to-date and that WHMIS requirements are followed.
  • Ensure maintenance of lab equipment. 
  • Conduct regular inventory of chemicals, equipment and materials using PARATOX in collaboration with the College’s Risk Manager.
  • Order, receive and restock lab chemicals and equipment.
  • When necessary, obtain materials from local stores for lab work.
  • Follow up with suppliers with respect to potential shortages and/or delays.
  • Order, receive and restock office supplies, as necessary.
  • Monitor maintenance requests, such as broken stools, drawers and faulty equipment.
  • Monitor science department inventory of chemicals, equipment and materials and order, receive and restock, as necessary; maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure proper collection and storage of chemical waste according to RPRA Environmental guidelines.  
  • Work with the school’s Risk Management Director on the Health and Safety Committee to ensure the College’s compliance.
Technology Support:
    • Liaise with company representatives to ensure software and equipment is up-to-date. 
    • Troubleshoot with outside representatives when necessary.
    • Share innovative initiatives using technology in the classroom.  
    • Support the use of technology in the classroom, planning and implementation of new curriculum through research, including improving personal proficiency to do so through professional development, as program changes are implemented.
    Department Budget:
    • Maintain and monitor the Science Department budget and review throughout the year with the department head.
    Classroom Contributions:
    • Prepare, set up and clean lab equipment; assist to prepare class materials.
    • Assist teachers and students during lab activities, when possible.
    • Provide supplemental information pertaining to lab activities and curriculum to department members.
    • Research and suggest new lab activities.
    Co-Curricular:
    • Contribute to the school’s co-curricular program through support of the club program.
    Cross Department Collaboration:
    • Support cross department collaborative projects.
    • Keep abreast of current developments in biology, physics, chemistry and earth & space areas of the curriculum.

    Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

    • Science degree or related post-secondary education.
    • Diploma in Chemistry Laboratory Technology is considered an asset.
    • Self-starter, able to work in a self-directed manner appropriate to changing needs.
    • High attention to detail.
    • Approachable, collaborative with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interact well with students, teachers, and other colleagues.
    • Ability to support teaching faculty with the planning of curriculum.
    • Understanding of safety requirements in the science classroom.
    • Strong technology and research skills.
    • WHMIS certification, First Aid certification, and TDGA (Transport of Dangerous Goods Act) training are beneficial.
