The Position

Reporting to the Manager of the Health Centre and Lead Nurse, the School Nurse is responsible for helping to support the physical and mental health of students. This role involves the provision of direct nursing care including assessing students, administering medication, maintaining current medical documentation, and suggesting service referrals. The work of health promotion with students is also a part of this role.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Provide nursing services at the Health Centre and on-campus (both Upper and Junior Schools) per the practices outlined by the College of Nurses.
  • Interested in a minimum of 4 shifts per month.
  • Assess students for physical, social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Refer to appropriate medical/support services when necessary (School Physician, Social Work, Emergency Services), and provide treatment and follow-up care where required.
  • Communicate with faculty, parents and students through conversation and the distribution of written information and as per the limits of professional confidentiality.
  • Work with families of students with prevalent or serious medical conditions to ensure a safe school environment and school care plans. 
  • Actively partner with and report problems or concerns to the Manager of the Health Centre.
  • Arrange appropriate transportation to medical-related appointments for boarding students; Accompany students to outside support services when required (hospital).
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, comprehensive and up-to-date records using Magnus Health Portal. Follow Health Centre protocol for documentation.
  • Liaise with the Public Health Department to maintain accurate immunization records for the Boarding Students.
  • Administer immunizations as required, and promote flu shot clinics.     
  • Conduct monthly first aid kit, EpiPen, and safety equipment checks in the Health Centre and around campus to ensure the kits and safety equipment are stocked and functional.
  • Assess inventory in the Health Centre.
  • Ensure students and families are adhering to the concussion protocol. Provide tracking forms, email and phone call for updates, following up with the appropriate staff on a need-to-know basis.  
  • Remain up-to-date on healthcare issues through seminars, workshops and readings.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and prevention through bulletin boards, health teaching and age-appropriate presentations for students JK- grade 12.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Maintain CPR and AED competency as per Havergal Policy.
  • Good knowledge of Google applications.  Adaptable to learning new in-house database and record system.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of 2 years of Pediatric Nursing experience required.
  • Primary care or emergency or pediatric clinical experience is an asset.
  • Ability to manage working in a fast-paced environment.
