Women in Action Coffee Program
The story of this coffee is a very special circle of Havergal connections.
We import high Atlantic Arabica green beans from the Alianza Mujeres de Café (Women’s Coffee Alliance) the women’s coffee co-operative in Costa Rica to which Old Girl Marigold Murray Genis (1953) belongs. The beans are freshly roasted at Merchants of Green Coffee in Toronto then shipped to us every week in ½ pound bags. Each bag costs $10, of which $2 goes back to the Alianza in Costa Rica. Every March our students can join a Global Experience Program excursion to Costa Rica to work at the Biolley Eco-Lodge owned by the Alianza, thereby contributing our funds and our labour to the strength of women farming coffee, including one of our own Old Girls!
Students direct the education, marketing, fundraising and investment efforts and decisions of this important project. Students will work with the women who are members of the Alianza to ensure maximum impact and accountability.
The coffee sold through the program is:
- Certified Fair Trade and Organic
- Custom-roasted locally
- Delivered to Havergal College within 24 hours
Merchants of Green Coffee and the Fresh Coffee Network will do their part to deliver quality coffee and to educate students and teachers on coffee farming, organic farming, fair trade and the various ways in which sustainable farming differs from large-scale farming methods.
We encourage you -- parents, teachers, staff and Old Girls -- to support the program and place your coffee orders. Your coffee consumer choices matter. Please visit http://www.freshcoffeenetwork.com/havergal/ to place your order.
