Excelling in Mathematics

On Monday, October 15, Havergal students who participated in the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing contests received their awards. All Havergal students in Grades 9 and 10 write the Pascal and Cayley math contests. Interested students in Grades 9 to 12 are also able to sign up to participate in the Fryer, Galois, Hypatia, Fermat and Euclid contests.

Certificates of Distinction are giving for students ranking in the top 25% of all contestants in Canada. For the Pascal, Cayley, Fermat and Euclid contests, medals are awarded to the top student in each contest at each school. For the Fryer, Galois and Hypatia contests, gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded for the top 25% of all contestants.

Congratulations to:

  • Kylie Kim, who received the highest result in the Pascal contest at Havergal.
  • Valerie Koo, who was the top scoring student for the Cayley contest at Havergal.
  • Jenny Kim and Clare Teng tied for the top score in the Fermat contest at Havergal.
  • Jen Chen, who received the highest score on the Euclid contest at Havergal.
  • Lydia Cheng, who received a gold certificate for the Fryer contest, which is a national competition.
  • Vanessa Koo, Anna Qin, Shirley Wang, Holly Guo, Angelina Pan, Claire Abbott and Christine Choi, who each received a silver certificate for the Fryer contest, which is a national competition.
  • Caroline Marshall, who received a bronze certificate in the Fryer contest, which is a national competition.
  • Ashley Koo and Joyce Lam, who each received a silver certificate in the Galois contest, which is a national competition.
  • Florence Peng, Teresa Li, Joy Chen, Valerie Koo and Maggie Lan, who received bronze certificates in the Galois contest, which is a national competition.
  • Samantha Yip, who received a gold certificate for the Hypatia contest, which is a national competition.
  • Jen Chen and Sarah Leong, who received silver certificates in the Hypatia contest, which is a national competition.

Congratulations to all of these award winners and everyone who participated in the math contests!
