Making Connections
The foundation for all the work of the Institute is that of Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen. He developed
the capabilities approach to human development.
Each year, to develop shared knowledge about the world and to continue to explore the question, "What kind of world do I want?" as an active focal point for learning, students will apply the capabilities approach to address the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
The focus in 2011/12 was“Celebrating Partnership” in honour of the 8th Millennium Development Goal of “Establishing a Global Partnership for Development”. We started with Celebration Day on October 1st when we featured our diverse and dynamic community partnerships. Students lead the partnerships for Havergal and manage our relationships with our partners. Student ideas have led to new partnerships that enable us to contribute to our world in areas of importance to the student body.
In 2010/11 through “The World: It’s Our School.” We addressed the Millennium Development Goal of education for all and explored the meaning of education and how we might ensure that all children have access to the education they need to shape their own lives in meaningful ways.
Building on Havergal's focus on a healthy world in 2008/09 and environmental sustainability in 2007/08, the Institute focused on the Millennium Development Goal of addressing poverty and hunger for 2009/2010. Because food is intimately connected to the environment and health and is an immediate issue for all humanity, it is an area in which our individual actions have immediate social significance.
Through the annual focus, we provide the opportunity to work with the knowledge of traditional disciplines in the school, and to apply it to themes that touch upon complex systems in our world today. In collaboration with people working beyond our school, we create opportunities to build knowledge through shared learning, and exposure to interesting people.
Junior School House Community Initiatives
Each year the Junior School Houses partner with community projects and organizations. These initiatives encourage the students to build relationships beyond the school, raise awareness of local and global issues, and encourage students to take informed action.
