  2. We are interested in Havergal for our daughter but she would be applying for a non-entry year. Should we apply by the application deadline or wait to see if a space becomes available?
Occasionally, space is available for non-entry years, so it is always advisable to apply. While Havergal’s attrition rate is very low at 2%, each year we do have families who are transferred out of Toronto. If we have your daughter’s application, testing and interview completed, we can notify you as soon as a place becomes available. If no space becomes available, your daughter’s application will be forwarded to the following year. She may also be exempt from writing another entrance test.

  3. My daughter’s school will not fill out the Confidential School Report. What should I do?
The information on the Confidential School Report helps us to better understand who your daughter is as a learner. We understand that not all schools are willing to complete the report. If there is a teacher from a previous school who knows your daughter well, he/she is more than welcome to complete the form. If that is not possible, please return the report to us with a note indicating that the school will not complete the form. Applicants are not penalized for this.

  4. My daughter is worried about her interview. How can I prepare her?
Interviews provide an opportunity for us to get to know the families who would like to join the Havergal community. To prepare for an interview, encourage your daughter to be herself. We recognize that girls, particularly those applying to the Junior School, may be nervous about this. Our staff members will do their best to ensure that your daughter feels comfortable throughout the process. We will be asking your daughter who she is, what she likes to do and what she hopes the Havergal experience will mean to her.

If your daughter is applying for Kindergarten or Grade 1, a member of the Admission Team will meet with you and your daughter. If your daughter is applying for other Junior School grades, she will be given the option of having you with her during the entire interview or, if she is comfortable, having you join the interview part way through the meeting. Of course, the interview is also a time for you and your daughter to ask any questions about our school and our programs.

  5. How is entrance testing used?
Havergal is an academically challenging school. It is important that students entering Havergal can be academically successful and be involved in the co-curricular program. With candidates for admission coming from such a large variety of schools and cities, it is important that we have a consistent academic measure. Each entrance assessment has been carefully chosen to be most relevant for each developmental stage and each grade level. However, the test is only one piece of the admission process, along with the interview, the student’s report cards and the Confidential School Report. We recognize that there are times when girls do not perform to their true potential during testing situations. If an applicant’s test results are not consistent with her report cards or interview, we will always bring the applicant back to meet with us again.

  6. Should I have my daughter tutored for the entrance test?
As the assessment measures innate ability, the best preparation is a good night’s sleep and a healthy meal before the assessment. No tutoring is required. Tutoring may actually be detrimental to your daughter’s performance, as it may cause her unnecessary stress.

  7. Can I submit my application prior to my daughter writing the SSAT?
Absolutely. We will contact you to book an interview as soon as we receive your daughter’s application form, application fee and report cards.

  8. Are siblings and connected applicants treated differently in the application process?
We highly value our community and families play an important role in our school. In a situation where two applicants are deemed equal, the school will favour the student who has a prior connection to Havergal as a sibling or a relative of an Old Girl. Although we do want a wide range of strengths, academic or otherwise, we cannot presume to meet the needs of every applicant. We believe that it is unethical to admit students who we think will not thrive at Havergal. Sometimes, for academic or other reasons, we are unable to offer siblings or those with a connection to an Old Girl a place at Havergal. As we make these difficult decisions, we will work closely with the family and ensure that we keep the needs of the student at the centre of our decision.

  9. Can we have more than one tour of the school?
Of course! While you and your family will have a tour of the school when you come for the interview, we know it maybe important to see the school on more than one occasion. Our students and Welcome Committee parents are happy to take you on a tour – simply contact the Admission Office one week prior to the day you would like to visit and we will make the necessary arrangements. If there are other members of your family who would like to join the tour, such as grandparents or siblings, please feel free to bring them along.
